I came across a story yesterday about pink parking spaces in South Korea. One city has decided to paint extra large spots a pretty pink so unskilled (women) drivers can park with ease. Apparently driving while female is a handicap.
In shock (and with a few giggles) I did a quick Google search. I discovered that South Korea is not alone.
I found an airport in Germany that also reserves some "very special rows" for women. And Swiss parking enforcers also adorn extra large spaces with pink outlines and flowers, hoping it will deter male drivers.
Before I could get too mad, I realized there was some method to Switzerland's apparent madness — the women-only spots are located next to a parking lot's exit, and under video surveillance.
So while South Korea insults "unskilled" women drivers, Switzerland promises to keep us safe. Either way, who wants to park in a bright pink spot? Well, maybe. It is sort of pretty.

This is strange. I've seen the "pregnant women" parking spaces that are near the front of a store, but make a parking space larger for one's ineptitude seems counter-intuitive. Maybe more time should be spent on teaching women how to parallel park better.
The safety thing is a bad idea too. Lights and cameras provide a huge false sense of security!
1For safety purposes sure!!!
2TresSugar is cheeky! i like it!
i always want to park in the pregnant lady spots at the mall and supermarket around here and if someone ever questionned me i'd say "hey, how do you know i'm not pregnant! i'm 6 wseeks along!" or something like that!
3why would you get mad? Some women and Men drivers cannot park, but women are more likely to use the "special" parking then the men, so they exist. I pick and choose my battles and parking spaces with flowers? aint important enough.
4I just think it's pointless. I find it to be weird that people care enough to sort of insult some women drivers, and forget about the men who can't park or drive for their lives. For pregnant people it's nice, and for women, for safety reasons, it's also nice. But I think if you want to attract good vibes, don't insult the abilities of just one sex. Seriously, like I said before, who cares enough do that that!
5I don't care if you are male or female. If you can't park a car you don't deserve to be behind the wheel.
6I would totally park in a giant pink space! I've been driving for five years and I'm still don't feel confident parking, so I'd love having a big space--and under a security camera? And in front? Sign me up!
7I personally think parking for pregnant women is just that, parking for pregnant women only. Not really for people who like to pretend so they get better parking.
I think its weird that some people aren't a little more weirded out by this. if the parking spaces were designated for obese people because they need more room to get out of their cars and can't do it comfortably in tight spaces, then people would claim they are getting special treatment, but special treatment for lousy female drivers is totally ok.
I'm with you Hiding, if you can't park ina normal space, maybe you shouldn't be driving.
8lol!
Ok, I dislike the insult....but I am cracking up anyways.
It makes sense to me to allow special spaces for handicapped people, pregnant women, and possibly even some other groups. As much as this makes me laugh, it is not a good thing. If someone can't park they shouldn't be able to have a license! We shouldn't encourage people who need more training to just not worry about it.
9Haha strema your avatar is so funny! : D
10I actually don't really care if there is some special parking place for women. I mean the more space the better isn't it?
I have seen such parking spaces a couple of times now (the vienna train station for example) and it just infuriates me. There's actually a point in putting these parking spots next to the exit and a video camera like in Switzerland.
11In Vienna though, they're in the middle of the garage, marked in pink and extra big. Women are generally viewed as horrible drivers by the male public but to actually give this stupid prejudice credibility by helping us out - because apparently, being a women equals a physical disability when driving/parking - makes me want to kill whoever is respsonsible for it... ARGH!
I have a son with special needs and my fiance and I refuse to use the handicapped spot which we have permission too, the way we see it is we both have perfectly healthy legs and my son has semi healthy legs, so this just boggles my mind. But to each their own, I also agree if you can't park you shouldn't drive that goes for my mom too. LOL.
12@skigurl, LOL 6 wks along
Those pregant spaces should be for people with little children, too. I've never been pregnant or had children, but I think they would be similar in inconvenience.
13unbelivable,if there is so many people who cant park correctly maybe the larger space to park should be for everyone, not just for women.but I dont have any problem parking and I am a woman.
14I'm pretty sure bright pretty flowers won't deter men who don't want to walk or wait for a parking space.
Next to exits for safety? Sure, why not. Though I would think that criminals might get more desperate and take their chances inside the stores or near the exits - they might be more likely to get caught, but stop them from *committing* crimes? I don't know about all that.
But having extra large parking spaces for women b/c they can't drive/park is stupid and sexist. If they're so bad at driving, what makes them think making the parking spaces bigger is going to help? If you can't park properly, you won't park properly. And you probably shouldn't be driving. That goes for women AND me. We have more guys who park all over the lines because of their stupid huge F-350 trucks with a Supercab...but of course they're men [so it's okay] and "they can't help that the truck is so big, it's like driving a boat." Well, then, DON'T HAVE ONE IF YOU CAN'T DRIVE IT.
15*women and meN. Not me! I can drive and park properly in some pretty tight spaces!
16Women only spots for safety concerns makes sense. Underground parking garages can be a little scary.
The spots for bad parkers? That's just a little sad. I'm awesome at parking.
17It seems blatantly offensive in the sense that it implies that women can't drive, not considering that it's being done for safety purposes, which makes it more acceptable (like pregnant parking). However, like several, I find it too hilarious to take to heart.
18I've driven a big truck and have gotten looks because of it. People assume it's a man and when a small little petite woman gets out they're shocked by it. Sometimes it is hard to drive those depending on the size of the space and leave room for the person next to me. If the space was small and I thought they couldn't get in I parked far away. I think some men wouldn't care what color a space was painted they would still park. I wouldn't use a bigger space unless I truly had a need for it like medical or safety. Bad parking would not be it.
19The "for women only" parking spots at the German airport are there for the same reason as the ones in Switzerland: security. Those so-called "Frauenparkplätze" are very common in German parking garages, usually they aren't any bigger than the other parking spots, but they are meant to add an extra level of security.
20Having extra large parking spots for women is simply ridiculous, imo.
I am a great parker! In fact, the few times my car has been damaged in a parking garage or in parallel parking spots on my block, the perps have been men in trucks and SUVs. So, there!
212 reasons why I wouldn't use these:
1) I hate pink and I find this a very insulting, so I wouldn't park there. 2) I like to park farther out in the parking lots and walk, rather than jockey for a spot.
22Most people in South Korea suck at driving, regardless if they are men or women so this isn't going to help them either.
23oh wow i really wish they do that in my country i suck when it comes to parking
24To me, it just makes it look like a big target. It's like, making it easier for a rapist or a mugger to find a victim, like "HEY! BIG PINK SPOT! WOMAN HERE, GET HER!" but of course, that's just what I think.
I suck at parking. But instead of taking an easy way out by parking in cutesy pink spaces [if they had them here i mean] I go to where there's at least 2 empty spaces next to each other so I KNOW I won't eff up someone else's car.
25Switzerland: Bravo! It is nice to see a country looking out for the safety of women
26Korea: Words cannot even begin to describe. But somehow I am not surprised
The really ironic part is I can totally see some guy using these larger, women only parking spaces to park their little sports cars in. You know the ones, they usually park diagonally across 2 spots or completely perpendicular to the parking lines taking up 2 sometimes 3 spots just so nobody will hit their precious car lol.
27Bigger spots for some means fewer spots overall for everyone to park. I'm against it (unless its for handicapped use).
28I have mixed feelings about this. While I would appreciate these parking spots, I know of a few men who are worse drivers, and who are worse at parking than me. Additionally, these men drive automatic-transmission cars (and I drive stick-shift). In my opinion, their cars are easier to operate than mine, and they're still worse off.
These parking spots seem inaccurately sexist to me. I think these parking spots should be available to men who need them, too.
29So what happens if a male drive uses one of the "female" parking spots that is near the front of the store just b/c he wants to be close, and then a bad guy sneaks into the car while he's gone, thinking it's a woman he can attack. And then the male drive comes out..hahahahah. Surprise for the bad guy, LOL LOL.
Sorry just the first thing I though. Rofl.
The larger parking spots are extremely insulting. I can drive and park a big truck and am working on doing it with a horse trailer in tow. And I know tons of women who drive huge F350 trucks and 4 horse trailers (very big) and can easily back into any spot with the trailer, much less pull a truck into a parking garage spot.
And men that drive small sports cars tend to suck at parking, b/c their cars are super easy to park b/c they are tiny. Put any of those guys into a SUV and they can't park worth a flip.
The women only parking spots meant for safety are kinda cool. Though I don't know how much safer it would really be.
30i would love it if parking places were all this big, don't mind at all. i could be a bit better at parking the car, i admit.
