Family Matters: Have Your Parents Ever Disliked Your Date?

Twice today I've read to beware of boys your parents dislike, but meeting the parents is a daunting date — for everyone. Sure parental approval is nice, but requiring it is only sound advice if you're parents are totally open, nonjudgmental people.

While it may be a red flag if nobody likes the new love in your life, parents are probably the hardest to win over. So have yours ever disapproved?

Ha! They didn't like ANY of them until they met my husband! The old cliche about a father sitting and cleaning a gun when his daughter's date shows up....I LIVED that with my father. So embarassing!

When I was 15 my parents disapproved of my boyfriend because 1. they said I was too young to have a boyfriend and 2. he had different religious beliefs. We eventually stopped being a couple but remained good friends. Turns out he's gay anyway. 15 years later we're still good friends and he gets along with my parents just fine. Once I was in college they didn't have any issues with any of my boyfriends... what am I saying?? I had no boyfriends! Well, they cheered me on and encouraged me to keep looking until I found Mr. Right, which I eventually did.

I once said to my dad "Hey, guess what?" and he responded with "You're dumping your boyfriend?" I have no idea where that came from, but I think it's because my dad is into watching sports and being outdoors and my boyfriend is more into playing video games and chilling out.I think they have more in common than they give each other credit for though!

My parents have more or less liked all the guys I've brought home, except for just one when my dad later told me he'd always expected me to be with someone more handsome!! (He only revealed that after we'd broken up.) Luckily, they both love my husband. Maybe a little too much - they're always more excited to see him than to see me when we visit :)

Of course my mom has, my dad is more subtle about things. But they're both RIGHT on the money that I shouldn't be dating that person anyway :)

No, my Mom has always trusted my judgment and would rather stay out of my business. As for my siblings... well, that's another story :P

My mom's mentally ill and tends to dislike anyone who's unlucky enough to cross her path. Good or bad, she despises all my dates. So I tend to seek approval from my most caring friends and cousins, instead.

yes, but it's because i'm an asian girl and my parents will hate any guy i'm with, unless he's a chinese/vietnamese doctor type who has no fun and only knows how to follow the rules and be conservative. >shiver<

Sure. But I broke-up with him for my own reasons. When it comes to my love life, I don't adopt borrowed opinions. I have a mind of my own -- I form my own opinion, and follow-through with it.
