Off the Table? House Considers Ban on Killing Horses For Food One menu item could soon disappear from foreign dinner tables: meat from slaughtered American horses. Animal rights advocates are urging lawmakers to pass a bill banning the slaughter of US horses for consumption abroad, arguing the practice is inhumane. Opponents of the proposal say it would actually increase cruelty in the form of abandonment, abuse and neglect.

I dont have a problem with eating them, but they need to make sure they are handled better if they do. There is no reason to mistreat our meat.

I have to agree with Jude. While, a horse steak isn't something that personally I find appealing, it's a commodity. Regulating the process is a much better alternative. A horse is a horse, of course, and in all reality not much different than a heifer, buffalo, lamb, hog, goat, salmon, tuna, chicken, turkey, all things we regularly consume in this county. And if horse is delectable to another, god bless 'em for it. I live in Nevada, and we have the *wild* horses that are starving, dying of dehydration, out competing most populations of true wildlife (deer, elk, antelope, sheep, etc.) and while I love the romanticism associated with the wild mustang, the reality is they don't belong here and certainly not in the populations that they are at currently. However, too many people are caught up in the *romantic* ideals, ignore the real impact on wildlife and point fingers at cattle ranchers (another discussion) when the government has to realistically address how to reduce the herd sizes (they proposed euthanizing them recently). I'd rather see them sold as a commodity to support the wild horse programs, but that's prohibited by the preservation act. Alas, I digress. Hey, horses are pretty and can be useful, but that doesn't make them immune from the fact that some people think they are tasty.

Perhaps they should simply focus on standardizing the slaughtering process. Besides the specific differences in how horses and other livestock are slaughtered, I see no difference between slaughtering and selling beef or pork and slaughtering and selling horse.
