Obama Draws Estimated Crowd of 75,000 in Portland Sen. Barack Obama has seen his share of large crowds over the last 15 months, but his campaign said they have not approached the numbers gathered along the waterfront here right now. The campaign, citing figures from Duane Bray, battalion chief of Portland Fire and Rescue, estimated that 75,000 people are watching him speak.

NYF... I agree! It's not "business as usual," everyone just has her categorized with the bush/clinton years. BUT whatever. Either candidate will be absolutely groundbreaking!

NYFashionista, I'm hoping to see him in person someday as well, so help out your CS friends if you have the hookup ;), school kept me from joing my friends on their road trips...:( I would also really like to meet Hillary as well, I think because her politics are a little old school and b/c she has been in the public for decades some people don't realize how ground breaking she is!

LOL the image of that just cracked me up Jill. Also large crowds attract criminals and trouble-makers. Every year in Chicago during the big fourth of July celebration on Lake Michigan there are always a couple of deaths. I don't go anymore. I go to Navy Pier now.

"I don't like concerts unless I have a seat. I HATE dance clubs. I don't like being up against that many people." I get it now! :) Large crowds like that scare me too. I am fairly petite, and at a Deftones concert one time, I was literally smooched vertically against someone and my feet lifted off the floor, and like a wave in the ocean, I was carried about 10 feet to my left. I felt like one of those pink pegs in the game of Life. Scary!

Zeze that's very interesting!! We have close family friends who know Obama personally (in fact are good friends...from his Columbia days) and I'm really really hoping one day I'll be able to meet him!

Exactly Steph. There is something about a huge group of people that is damn right frightening to me. It's electric...like ANYTHING could happen. I wouldn't have set foot there...but clearly I have a large group of people phobia. :scared:

My friends and I got up bright and early yesterday to wait in line to see him. It was definitely worth it....sunburns and all. We were about 15 feet away from him, and it was absolutely incredible. And it was the Decemberists who played before he spoke. I wasn't even aware of it until about 10am when someone mentioned it to me. Added bonus!

That's what I mean Jill! I don't like concerts unless I have a seat. I HATE dance clubs. I don't like being up against that many people. It freaks me out. AND whenever you get that many people together there is always a danger of something crazy happening.

I have to tell you, going to rallies aren't always fun. They are usually very hot, and have poor bathroom facilities. Port-O-Potty, anyone? The fact that this many people would give up their Saturday to LEARN about a candidate is fantastic. The more average people are involved with our political system, the better off we all are, IMO. :)

I think a lot of people want to see him to witness history. I know a few of my friends, Obama and McCain supporters (no Hillary though, sorry Harmony) went to a near by state to see him speak just to see it, not because they support him for president, but because this is anm important time in history that they wanted to experience.

I was not trying to imply that anyone is checking their intelligence at the door. Huge crowds like that scare me no matter what it's for.

I gotta disagree Harmony. I mean god forbid that we should have a candidate and possible President that many people actually admire and respect. I'm pretty tired of the "lesser of two evils" situation we've had the last few elections and I want a candidate that I truly believe in. The more I've heard from Obama the more I respect him and support him. Everyone loves a bandwagon, but I think that much of his support is coming from people like me who grow to like him more and more.

Easy, rac. Okay, Sister Christian is a beautiful song and my favorite track on my "Monster Ballads of a Super Long Time Ago" CD. I didn't realize you felt so strongly. Next time I shall google before risking the wrath of the prarie dog. :):bunny:
