Defying the world, North Korea launched a rocket Sunday, demonstrating that the country is getting closer to being able to fire a nuclear warhead. Japan, the United States, and China, among other countries, had urged North Korea to forgo the test launch. The rocket traveled over Japan into the Pacific Ocean, and was not intercepted.

In front of 20,000 people in Prague today, President Obama urged the U.N. Security Council to take action against North Korea because the rocket launched violated international rules. China and Russia are asking for a cautious response, and it is likely that the council will call for stricter application of current sanctions, instead of imposing new ones. International sanctions issued during Bush's tenure have proven to have little effect. Let's hope something changes.

And what will the rest of the world do in response? Defer to the US, once again. No wonder people in the US are a little arrogant. We have been deemed the peacekeepers of the world, and the rest of the world isn't willing to pitch in and do their share.
1If President Obama wants to call for actions, he'd better be ready to back it up. Otherwise he just furthers the impression that he is all talk and no action.
2First of all UnDave no one has asked the US to do anything, you are the ones making a fuss about this and taking it the UN security council. Most countries couldn't give two sh!ts about Kim Jong Il and his nutty ways. no one deemed you the peace keepers of the world but if you police the world then you can be sure that's the title you will get, if you do it to one country then you might as well do it to the rest right.
3No one asks us until there is a genocide going on. Then the UN talks about resolutions, and the citizens go on TV and ask where is the US to help us in our time of need. Then we get into trouble for going in too strongly, or taking too long before we go in.
4Obama wants us to set the precedent and go nuclear free, while this mad man is test firing all sorts of rockets/missiles and enriching uranium. Obama is a naive idiot and is going to get a lot of us in real danger. But you know we need to set the moral example since we were the only ones who have used a nuc... [sarcasm]
5Why call us when there's genocide? We don't rush to help then, just ask the survivors in Darfur and Rwanda.
It's not a 'nuc' it's a 'nuke'
6Wait a minute, Obama did say that if North Korea launched the missile there would be repercussions. Like what, Kim won't get to dance with Former Sect. of State Albright ever again?
7I was under the impression that it'd be intercepted. I guess I was wrong because it wasn't intercepted at all...
8Was it a satellite like the NK claimed it was?
Hope, Obama did not want it to appear that the U.S. was arrogent in the worlds eyes.
9It never got into space, but I bet dear leader is telling everyone it did.
russia and China are defending N. Korea "it was just a satellite" whatever.
10It made me think of an old cartoon...what was that looney toon western figure; short guy with a long, red mustache? Anyway, I can just see him jumping up and down, hollering about blowing up something or other, then having it blow up in his face. Classic.

13lol
Aha! Thanks
14No problem
15Nya, sure, there are countries that don't care about Kim Jong ll because the missile he launched can't reach their countries. But I bet they start caring when he develops a better delivery system.
16So scary.
17as we decrease our military spending & are apologizing to everyone for our arrogance, what can we do about these aggressive acts? Maybe it is time to sing Kumbaya?
18How immature and sad it is that people feel they have to comment on someones spelling rather then the issues at hand. What is even more sad is when they are wrong....
19Acronym - NUC
Definition - Nuclear
You can use the idiot term nuke which makes NO SENSE grammatically, but please comment on the issues and not my spelling!
Hainan,Looking at spelling and grammar is just a clever way of saying that you don’t want an “honest conversation” at all.
20Actually Hain, nuc is an acronym for nucleoside, any of various compounds consisting of a sugar and a nitrogen base (a purine or pyrimidine).
Nuke, however idiotic and nonsensical you find the term, has been in use since the 1940s. If you're going to rant, it's a good idea to make sure people can understand you.
Were you really saying you don't believe in setting moral examples?
21Going nuclear free ONLY because we are the only ones who used them is a damn stupid moral example. There is no problem with nuclear, and I for damn sure don't want to be the only country without one. He is a naive idiot to think that everyone else is going to go nuclear free simply because we set the "moral example". And my comment was perfectly understandable to those who aren't blinded by political biases.
22What's the political bias in using the accepted term used for more than 50 years?
No one's saying we should nuclear free ONLY because we are the only ones who used them. There ARE problems with nuclear - nukes can destroy whole cities, shift the balance of power in what we consider scary ways, keep a region politically destabilized.
23I think most people believe it's a negative to live in the shadow of weapons that could quickly destroy the world as we know it.
Hainan, it's scares the heck out of me, too--the thought of being the only nation without them.
24I am sure everyone except those who are coming across as very petty, had no problem understanding exactly what you were saying.
btw, agree with you about Obama being naive. God forbid we have another attack, it is squarely on Obama's shoulders and his lame approach in protecting this country from attack.
25Do you think we should attack North Korea? Shoot down its test weapon in what it would view as an act of war? Japan is in more danger from North Korea than we are and it decided not to fire - are they wimps too?
Are you ready for a third war right now? Did Bush leave a U.S. military strong enough to go into a third war right now? What do you think China would do if we provoked a military confrontation with North Korea?
As I recall, the last guy did a great job protecting this country from attack - didn't he ignore warnings that an attack was imminent? That's not naive, so what would you call it?
26The "last guy" acted the same as the guy before him. Unfortunately, because the guy before him failed to take the threat seriousily, they had several years to actually plan the attack, including the training of the pilots.
27No Dave, 'the guy before him' didn't have a presidential briefing called "Bin Laden determined to attack inside the U.S." turned in to him and ignored.
28Steph, get a life. You are starting to sound like a conspiracy nut. ...and no I am not going to debate this with you. You clearly look through a prism that filters out anything you do not want to agree with. The so called briefing was non specific as to time, nature, place, or any other specific. It was not even presented with any sense of urgency.
29Grandpa, in the past you've taken issue with personal attacks. Why not take your own advice, instead of attacking Steph?
30I mean it's just not necessary. Have a productive discussion, feel free to disagree, but there's no need to be insulting.
31G'pa, no asked you debate it with me. Dave made the comment that led to my response.
The issue in this thread is North Korea's nukes and some people's insistance that President Obama is a "naive idiot" for not responding in kind to its aggressive acts. Perhaps you want to sidetrack the thread with insults because beyond ranting about Obama, none of his critics know what they actually would want him to do.
32Obama is doing exactly what this "critic" thought he'd do when challenged. Showing weakness and his inexperience.
33Steph that canard that Bush was warned about the attack has been a proven fraud, amd to see it still being put out there makes my blood boil. What next Black helicopters, or protocols of Zion??
34G'pa, no it isn't a canard and hasn't been proven a fraud - I'm sure Newsmax and the American Spectator have spun the story like crazy but the vacationing president was told that his terror czar believed bin Laden was getting ready to move. When Condi Rice said no one could imagine the attack, THAT was a canard.
Pam you keep saying things like that but you don't say what Obama should have done. Bush shut North Korea out for years, is that the kind of strength you want from a leader?
35No, it was the 911 commission report.
36Notice that not one critic here has said what they think Obama should do. The attacks simply are reflex...
37Steph, that could be a valid point, if Obama, did not say there would be serious consequences if NK launched the missile. If the president did not have a mechanism to back up his threat, he should have said nothing at all. There is no easy answer to North Korea. I do have one fear, and that is Japan will also go "nuclear", and develop it's own ICBM's.
38Grandpa, you couldn't blame Japan at all if they do develop their own ICBMs. and I can't blame Israel for standing up to Iran.
Steph, protecting our country is Obama's Number One job. Obama needs to step up our military & defense or at least make it his number one priority; not diminish it as he is doing. Stop his wasteful spending & do not apologize for us or call us arrogant and dismissive on foreign soil.
39FINE - if just one of critics could do something other than rant: say what exactly Obama needs to do. Critics here have done nothing but insult and make generalisations. "he needs to step up our military & defense or at least make it his number one priority" - general, not one specific thought in there: what do you want him to do about North Korea????
40Pam, I do not, would not blame Japan, or any other country that values it's independence for developing their own nuclear capability when both China and NK have developed, or are close to develop a nuclear tipped delivery system. No country can afford to leave their best interests to be served by another country. The U.S. is no longer the guarantor of world stability. The proposed cuts in the Defence budget is making it hard to present a world wide presence. With all the debt we have accrued, and continue to accrue at an alarming rate, will put our defence force basically not much greater, or even on a par with Great Britain.
41"With all the debt we have accrued, and continue to accrue at an alarming rate, will put our defence force basically not much greater, or even on a par with Great Britain."
Nonsense which suggests a lack of awareness of just how great the U.S.' military superiority is right now - and how seriously we've been outspending other NATO states, Russia, China, Japan, Iraq and North Korea COMBINED.
42"what do you want him to do about North Korea???? "
First - I want him to treat the N.K. government, and it's leader, like the thugs they are. You don't give respect to someone who doesn't deserve it.
Second - If we know where the launching pads are, we bomb them out of existance. If we see a rocket on a pad, we destroy it. No more opportunities to practice and perfect his launch capabilities.
Third - We find out who is giving support and aid to the N.K., and they get the same treatment.
43Steph, You are way off base here. Neither China nor Russia put all there defence spending in their defence budget. The equipment used by our military in both Iraq and Afghanistan, is wearing out that they are near the end of their useful life. That equipment has not been replaced. The lead time on weapons development is measured in years, if not in decades.
44Completely agree Grandpa & UnDave.
The problem I have answering Steph is that Obama is already acting completely opposite of what I think is a prudent course to protect America from closing Gitmo etc. IMO he appears to be ashamed of America. His whole approach emboldens our enemies.
It is a very dicey game and I don't think Obama is the right man for the job he has before him & his conduct only validates my thinking.
45At least Dave spoke to the North Korean issue. Of course, he wants a war...
46Pam, you just don't like anything Obama does kind of in a general way because you're never clear on what you want and certainly haven't been here - you just know you don't like Obama.
G'pa - I'm sure if you know how the Russians & Chinese fudge their budgets, U.S. military experts do as well. We outspend everyone and no one's recommending a total freeze on U.S. military spending, just calling for it to be smarter.
The Dept. of Defence has had it's budget reduced by 10%.
47right Steph. If I thought he was the man with the answers I would have voted for him. He doesn't have it in him, IMO to do what I would expect. I said I agree with UnDave"

Restated: steel fist in a velvet glove.
48Defense gets nearly half of the nation's budget, they'll survive and flourish and so will we. For a guy who's frantic over spending, you think you'd look closely and see where those budget cuts are coming.
Steel fists in velvet gloves - sounds impressive, but ultimately a meaningless notion.
49Steph, I am, and I will continue to look closely at the budget cuts, and also the deficit, and economy.
