The current issue of Newsweek critiques a speech John McCain gave over a month ago. Old news, right? Well, apparently not — no one seemed to talk about the comprehensive, yet confused, speech made by a would-be president.

McCain proposed expelling Russia from the G-8 (the council of world economic powers), and adding India and Brazil, while rebuffing China. This active exclusion of two major world powers would undo the work of two of McCain's GOP predecessors — Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.
The article's author, Fareed Zakaria, lamented McCain's betrayal of pragmatism:
I write this with sadness because I greatly admire John McCain, a man of intelligence, honor and enormous personal and political courage. I also agree with much of what else he said in that speech in Los Angeles. But in recent years, McCain has turned into a foreign-policy schizophrenic, alternating between neoconservative posturing and realist common sense.
McCain's position actively opposes all non-democracies, at the expense of US strategic allies and national security.
McCain isn't the only one making extreme foreign policy statements. For some democratic comparison, read more.
Last week, Hillary Clinton told Good Morning America that she would "totally obliterate" Iran if it foolishly considered launching an attack on Israel. Countries around the world took notice, and critics called the Clinton statements foolish and dangerous.
Barack Obama's openness to communicating with adversaries has been considered radical; yet, it seems the other candidates are over compensating with dangerous rhetoric. Do you think it's smart for the US to pursue a "with us, or against us" foreign policy? Can the US afford to actively exclude non-democratic powers?

Emilio Pucci
I don't think you can afford to exclude anyone in a world that gets smaller every day. You just can't ignore other nations in this age of commerce, communication, and travel.
I can't believe Hillary said that. That comment was SO pointed at gaining support from conservatives. I don't think she would really proceed to obliterate Iran, and that was a pretty stupid, inflammatory thing to say. While I don't believe in "negotiating" with bullies, common sense tells you at the very least not to provoke them!
1But Iran banned Barbies!!
We SHOULD obliterate them!!
2then we should send a massive cloud of pink baloons that blocks out their sun, and shower them with thousands of teeny tiny high heels that will poke their feet when stepped on.
3you girls are crazy.
my two cents: as long as Russia keeps sending weapons to terrorist groups in the middle east, I have to agree that they shouldn't be able to "play" with us.
4and we should send red balloons to moscow...
599 red balloons?
6but of course
7hey cab do you know anything about Frederick, MD?
8uhhh noooo... I don't. I've heard of it though, and I think its supposed to be a nicer area.
The problem with the DC metro area is that its not consistently nice anywhere you know? Is he gonna be working right in DC? or in MD?
I hope I'm not bumming you out!
9this is scary. i think a lot of people are hoping for a change in november and a return to a time when we weren't the most hated nation in the world. i hope to god john mccain is not elected president. if he is... expect at least a few more wars, at least a few more generations of our soldiers embroiled in the two current failing wars, and us being the target of lots more terrorist attacks. 2009 might be a good year to get the heck out of america.
10haha yesteryear!
and they say only republicans use the politics of fear!
11my husband's job will now be in dickerson.
12If McCain is elected president, and anyone wants to leave the country, I'll help'em pack.
13it looks like thats kinda in the suburbs... thats not bad! maryland suburbs aren't bad at all!
14Here you ladies are!
I am much more fearful of Obama becoming President then McCain, but that is just me.
15And gentleman.
16hahah gentleMAN.... singular
17hi ya'll! Cine I hope you're feeling better today.
18I just do not think this is helpful to exclude nations when you are trying to solve very important problems. Russia is a very dangerous nation, and we do not need them working against us. Nuclear proliferation is a very serious threat and it goes hand in hand with terrorism. To insult countries that have these weapons instead of working with them is fool hardy.
Hillary's plan is impossible because we don't have the power to defend everyone in her "security umbrella".
I liked this part of the article that discusses keeping China out of the G8:
19"the G8 was created to help coordinate problems of the emerging global economy. Every day these problems multiply—involving trade, pollution, currencies—and are in greater need of coordination. To have a body that attempts to do this but excludes the world's second largest economy is to condemn it to failure and irrelevance. International groups are not cheerleading bodies but exist to help solve pressing global crises. Excluding countries won't make the problems go away."
Stupid rain won't leave. It makes me tired, and my hair frizzy.
20You bring up very good points, Jillness. I agree that excluding a country while trying to trade with that country is potentially disastrous. I would like to see the G8 actually working together for the collective good, not teaming up against the US because we are the only remaining superpower.
21thank you, jillness - excellent points. and i'm not trying to make anyone scared... i'm just stating the facts. everyone can decide on their own how they feel about them.
if you all remember the beginning of the bush administration - before 9/11 - there was tons of media coverage of how he was turning out to be one of the must exclusionary, isolationist presidents we'd had in a generation. but as soon as 9/11 happened, he turned on a dime and we were suddenly the world's last hope for democracy and everyone's savior. i find it repulsive that now that he's gutted our image around the world and basically made all of our allies look at us as the big, fat bully on the playground, mccain is planning to follow this up with silent treatment for the nations we absolutely MUST work with to solve our current energy and food crises. how can this possibly be a good thing??
22Thanks, Undave!
I feel like since our country is already so tied to China with debt and trade that it would only hurt us more to exclude them.
23Another part of that really stood out to me:
The single most important security problem that the United States faces is securing loose nuclear materials. A terrorist group can pose an existential threat to the global order only by getting hold of such material. We also have an interest in stopping proliferation, particularly by rogue regimes like Iran and North Korea. To achieve both of these core objectives—which would make American safe and the world more secure—we need Russian cooperation. How fulsome is that likely to be if we gratuitously initiate hostilities with Moscow? Dissing dictators might make for a stirring speech, but ordinary Americans will have to live with the complications after the applause dies down.
24You make an interesting point about the food shortage, especially in other countries. Why aren't we using our food surpluses to TRADE/BARTER with other countries for things like.....OIL? Why do we give are resources away, and then cry at the cost of higher fuel and the falling dollar?
25You are so right Jillness. In the mean time, I hope our countries current leaders, dem and republican alike will stop making snarky comments like Hillary did, and Condoleeza did toward Mutada-what's-his-name. Hasn't anyone read Sun Tzu?
"Warfare" isn't limited to
physical tactics, positioning, etc.
26I agree Kris!
27Federal Government should get out of the Agricultural system in the US, and maybe things would work a lot better.
28Oh Cine you just want the Federal government out of everything!
29Brace yourself CIne...
I agree! I think there are way too many farm subsudies. I am not an expert in the subject, so my opinion is not firm, but from what I have read/seen it seems as if a lot of money is going there way.
30WHOA...
Cine and Jillness agree... its a sign of the apocalypse!!
31what we need is a farmer in here to tell us their side. Alas, farmers don't have time to sit around typing on social networking sites.
32I always thought the sign of the Apocalypse was my best friend shaving her legs after 5 years of not shaving. Even before she finally shaved her legs, I told her this. I made sure she was aware of the huge impact shaving her legs would have on the world. But she did it, and everything is okay.
335 years of not shaving her legs?!? how is that possible??
why did she decide to start again? did she keep up with it?
34Not shaving my legs is easy. I haven't done that in 38 years...
35HOly crap Jill! Seriously, this day is will go down in HISTORY!
The more you read about farm subsidies, the more you will dislike them.
36HA! I have hippy friends that have not shaved their arm pits or legs in about 5 years.
I did not shave my legs for a year once
But that is when I had dread locks, so
it is okay.
37she didn't like her legs, and always wore pants. she thinks they are too skinny, and just didn't feel like it, as she stated. when she got married, her sister and I bought her the fanciest leg shaving goodie basket we could put together. I think she has maintained it, for the most part.
38Cine, I'm almost afraid to ask. if you feel like sharing with us why you had dreadlocks, please do.
39Oh, and can I recommend Benefit leg shaving products? There is something called "Touch Me and Then Try To Leave" or something similar. It lives up to its promises in the soft legs department. that is what we got for my friend.
40cine in dreadlocks. omg. there is so much we do not know.
41Why did I have dreads? I thought they were awesome. Then I found a bug on them, and some floating earings and I took them out. I was a strange teen. I also used to shave the majority of my head and have rainbow hair.
The funny part is I was STILL a Conservative even back then. Just a Conservative with dreads.
Can you imagine the conversations I had at Grateful Dead shows
42Oh Sy, that is only the beginning.
43the bug would have done it for me.
44Yeah. It was disgusting to say the least. I still love dreadie men. They are yummy looking.
45
well I can see what's going to be pulled up in 2012 in negative ads against cine/syako
46Sy, all we have to do is write a book disclosing my past, and we are in the clear. Then people will feel as though they relate to me.
47Ewww dreads are so gross. Even seeing the word makes me feel like I'm already smelly patchouli... ick! I grew up next to Vermont, hippies do nothing for me, other than piss me off!
Cine, as much as I hate Ann Coulter, did you know she is a HUGE Deadhead?? There was an article about how her Deadheadness and how hippies are actually conservative!
Let me see if I can find it for you...

49Ann Coulter: "But whatever their myriad interests, clothing choices, and interest in illicit drugs, true Deadheads are what liberals claim to be but aren't: unique, free-thinking, open, kind, and interested in different ideas."
