Minnesota Bridge Collapse: Deal Reached To Compensate Victims State lawmakers said Friday they reached a $38 million agreement to compensate victims of the Minneapolis bridge collapse that killed 13 people and injured 145 others.

It's not the lowering of taxes that is the problem. When Bush's tax cuts were passed, the leading ecconomic experts predicted that the corresponding dip in tax income would happen. Instead, we had record amounts of tax income over the last 4 years (I think). The problem is with spending. The republican congress spent like there was no tomorrow (not a conservative trait, and we saw what happened to them), and the president didn't veto the bulging budgets. The current congress is not doing any better. I agree that it is time for a change, I just don't think the democratic party is any better. Any suggestions?

Great points, Juju! There are some very important things that we NEED tax money for, our we will all be in danger. There are 16,000 bridges that are in the same category of disrepair that the Minnesota bridge was in that will NOT get their inspections this year because of funding! Imagine if we remove the gas tax on top of that? Not to mention that the Department of Transportation says it will cost 300,000 jobs!

Great points, Juju!There are some very important things that we NEED tax money for, our we will all be in danger. There are 16,000 bridges that are in the same category of disrepair that the Minnesota bridge was in that will NOT get their inspections this year because of funding! Imagine if we remove the gas tax on top of that? Not to mention that the Department of Transportation says it will cost 300,000 jobs!

This is what happens when America decides to lower taxes when we are in debt. Money to repair our roads and bridges has to come from somewhere, and we didn't have it so it didn't get done. And the government is paying out more money than it would have cost to keep teh bridge maintained in the first place....not to mention the loss of life, which has cost beyond measure.This is a prime example of why the gas tax holiday is a horrible idea. Our government needs our tax dollars to keep us safe! Make the gas companies lower their profits instead.
