Michelle Obama, with a fresh ink feature in the NYT, dropped by the Tonight Show last night in advance of Obama's 30-minute TV spot airing tomorrow night. She also joined the sisterhood of the traveling pants as it were, being understanding about Palin's current wardrobe conundrum. Michelle said, "A VP pick, it's like being shot out of a cannon. All of a sudden you're at the center of attention, and you want to look good. You're living in your home, minding your business, and all of a sudden you're on the national stage and everyone's watching."

She said her kids were less than thrilled about their Dad's impending TV appearance. Malia said, "'You're going to be on all the TV? Are you going to interrupt my TV?'" Obama assured her he hadn't bought time on Disney or Nickelodeon.
Cindy McCain is blazing up the trail too, recently in Florida with Rudy Giuliani touting her husband's credentials. Cindy said, "We need someone who understands what it means to send young men into combat and bring them home." Hitting hot local breakfast spots, the race car driver and pilot Cindy is shaking hands with the best of them.

Michelle is such a classy lady. What a great response to the wardrobe-gate question.
1Love Michelle Obama. The second half of her interview is on YouTube. Can't decide if I love her outfit, but I think she's pulling it off.
2I watched the interview on huffington this morning. I really enjoyed the interview.
3LOL! I guess Malia is too cute! I love Michelle. She seems really down to Earth and her concerns about the women working and the economy hits home for me! I am a single mother of two boys and I can't buy the things that I used to be able to buy with my paycheck.....oh well
4Damn, with an answer like that she should have run as Obama's VP - it would be sure to result in less "rhetorical flourishes"
Obama's daughters are pretty funny...

Michelle is fantastic, I find her to be a great inspiration for women. Look where working hard has gotten her. She didn't have a trust fund, inheritance that helped her get to where she is. She is the epitome of class and sophistication. Well-spoken and beautiful. I see why Barack is so in love with her.
TS: I really liked her outfit, yellow is her color. She always looks so lovely.
7I love Michelle, like just about everyone. She is such an inspiration because she did have a great career and struggled with career vs. kids and everything that most women in this country will struggle with. Even if it doesn't solve the tough dilemmas, I think it is important to have someone who understands. Plus she is so smart and well spoken and composed, I feel like she raises the bar a bit.
8indielove and MarinerMandy - great posts.
9Michelle is driven, hardworking, educated, sophisticated, classy and never forgot where she came from. I admire her independence and values. She would be a First Lady we can be proud of.
How many people are checking out jcrew.com to find out how much her outfit cost
One more thing - Michelle is a role model I can identify with, unlike Caribou Barbie who stands for nothing I stand for. Every time I hear conservatives tout Palin as a role model all women should feel insulted.
10The bit about Barack's grandmother calling him "Bear" is pretty cute — as is the story about Malia. (That little girl seems like such a little firecracker!) And I had no idea that Cindy McCain likes car racing!
11I know Michelle is always trying to make the girls seem grounded, but sometimes the "Don't interrupt my tv," and "I don't care what happened in your day, look at my soccer trophy" makes them sound obnoxious. I think it's more how she describes them, not how they are, though.
12Thanks dream, I wanted to read the whole thing!
She is such a classy lady
13I wish Cindy McCain would lighten her makeup a bit - she's a pretty woman with a great smile, but she keeps coming out looking harsh.
14TS: I don't think it sounds obnoxious at all. Alot of other kids are worse. It just makes Malia and Sasha seem human, not "perfect, poster-child" kids. It wouldn't be believable. I love those kids, they seem very grounded, they have amazing parents.
15steph: I think Cindy looked alot better when she actually had some meat on her bones. She was never fat or chub as far as I can tell but she's been looking extra thin in the last few years. I agree, she wears way too much makeup.
16Love Michelle. She is all class and an inspiration to young women!
17No Cindy support on here? Well politics aside, Michelle seems to have a more interesting personality, seems less robotic and more intelligent...I like Michelle.
18"seems less robotic and more intelligent.."
Haha..UH OH.
19so if you do have a trust fund or inheritance money you dont work hard for what you have?
20Michelle worked her way up from poverty to making six figures. I'm sorry but I look up to that more than a woman who inherited money even though she has to work hard to manage it. Maybe its because I come from a background similar to Michelle but I definitely admire her more.
21wow Michelle is so classy. You can tell she's just being herself and not trying hard at all!
22i agree with simplyfab .
Not to say that a person who gets something handed to her doesn't work hard because i'm sure she does...but obviously someone who works from the bottom all the way is much more inspirational!
23"so if you do have a trust fund or inheritance money you dont work hard for what you have?"
Believe whatever you want to believe. I completely agree with what simplyfab and mommaof2 said.
Not in the mood for the old 'bait and distort'.
24well then dont state something that is baiting....
25Oh gee whiz, my mistake. I didn't know that I needed to tailor my posts to your needs. I'll consider what you said and try to do better next time.
Or not.
26ooo I love her!
27I love this woman!!
28*to fit your needs.
29I love Michelle. She's intelligent and doesn't try to hide that from anybody. She is so down to earth, classy and humble. Both she and Barack worked hard for everything they have now with the help of their families and friends, definitely something I look up to. She is an inspiration and a role model, IMO.
I love that yellow blouse underneath the sweater, it's beautiful.
30Clearly a person who doesn't start her adult life off with a trust fund/inheritance/other form of unearned (by her) wealth does have to work far harder and struggle far more to achieve financial success and independence, no? That's not even a partisan thing, just common sense.
31"She's intelligent and doesn't try to hide that from anybody. "
Not according to Elisabeth Hasselbeck who claimed that Michelle had a list of topics not to be touched when she was a guest host on the View.
32Well put, Jude.
33whatever nevermind....Its not going to make sense to you. but thank you for not answering my innocent question with sarcasm.
34That's why I've never understood how the Obamas, who had neither wealthy nor powerful or influential families helping them get a leg up early in life, are still seen by some as elitists out of touch with the struggles of regular Americans. It just really doesn't add up in my mind.
35CG, I'm sure Cindy worked very hard for her achievements and the things that matter to her--I think people are just making a point that she didn't have to work hard just to get her opportunities, or to succeed for survival and to help support her family.
36Jude, it shows you how you can spin anything now to suit your own agenda.
37This equating education with elitism is such a backward step. Education is the way out of poverty. It should be applauded that both of the Obama's made their own way in the world to gain an ivy league education, not sneered at.
Indie...elizabeth will say anything to get people to like Mac and Palin..i cant stand her!
38I think Elizabeth is someone they should ask NOT to show her support for them, she always comes off as shrill and completely out of her depth. A step away from a backwards B on the cheek if you ask me.
39Agreed, ceej. You could say Michelle Obama is more inspiring because she worked her way up, or you could say Cindy McCain is more inspiring because she was well off enough to lay around the pool her whole life but instead chose to do charity work. You could say Michelle Obama overcame obstacles of being black or you could say Cindy McCain overcame her drug addiction. There's good things about them both.
I don't think one person saying Michelle is inspiring and worked hard because she built what she has without a trust fund or other family safety net puts anyone down or implies she is better, CG.
40That's exactly right TS, for al of the Paris Hilton's there are just as many trust fund babies that do a lot of good work.
41One of the ultimate trust fund babies, Princess Anne, has always been hard working, thrifty and humble. Never once trading on her privileged position.
ceej? I don't follow - how did Jude say that?
42I think she was responding to my comment #35, zeze, about how ridiculous it is that the Obamas are still seen by some as elitist despite being the ones who had no extra legs up early in life.
43well put TS...nobody has said that Michelle is better. Everyone has different views on these ladies!
cant wait for the election to be over...
44ceej: They'll take any support as long as they can get it. Look at how they were trying to pander to Hispanic/Latinos by touting the endorsement of a telenovela(soap opera)actress. Also, by getting Daddy Yankee to stump for him, pandering again.
45i still get confused with the whole daddy yankee thingy...that was just strange...
46"I think she was responding to my comment #35, zeze, about how ridiculous it is that the Obamas are still seen by some as elitist despite being the ones who had no extra legs up early in life."
I know, but I don't see how saying what you said is "equating education with elitism" - I thought you were saying that it is ridiculous for people to call them elitist when their backgrounds are the farthest thing from being "elitist."
47"I think she was responding to my comment #35, zeze, about how ridiculous it is that the Obamas are still seen by some as elitist despite being the ones who had no extra legs up early in life."

48sorry for the double post...jittery fingers
49i know im late to this party, but when it comes to a persons accomplishments in life, i have a lot more respect for someone who worked their way up than for someone who had everything handed to them and then made the "right choice" to do charity work.
