Michelle Obama Honors Black History Month

Michelle Obama invited 200 schoolchildren into the East Room of the White House yesterday to celebrate Black History Month. While she was impressed with the students' knowledge of black history, she encouraged them to look beyond the names in history books to the people in their day-to-day lives, like parents, teachers, and grandparents.

The all-female a cappella ensemble, Sweet Honey in the Rock, performed to the cheering group, which included the first lady's daughters, Sasha and Malia, and mother, Marian Robinson.

My thoughts exactly Mich...she looks the best I've seen her. and people need to stop being so darn sensitive...it is understandable that Black History Month has more meaning to her...same as women's issues have more meaning to women, and veterans day has more meaning to veterans.

We can't get serious about it in school until we decide that educationally we need to hold them to a higher standard, and not lower the bar to bring up the bottom 1/3

It would be cool if she did do the same every month - I'm sure she'd find the kids knew less and less about different contributors to U.S. history, and maybe then we'd get more serious about it in our schools.

I wonder if she will do the same for Women's History Month, Jewish History Month, Asian History Month, and so on.
