McCain "Disappointed" That Debate Called A Tie Republican White House hopeful John McCain, fresh from his first debate with Democratic rival Barack Obama in Mississippi, expressed regret on Saturday that his performance didn't win over all the pundits in the press. "I was a little disappointed the media called it a tie but I think that means, when they call it a tie, that means we win," McCain said during a telephone call that was caught by cameras filming him at his campaign headquarters.

Oops if anyone bothered to read my horrifically long post, I meant to say my bf's mom says FoxNews has the only balanced news...

Oh I'm so late to this, but I agree with Michelin about McCain's comments "if the media says it's a tie it means I won." But I think he's wrong, CNN, NYTimes, took pains to explain their polling, including # of dems. voting, etc. It's not like the media calling it a tie was Keith Olbermann calling it a tie; then yeah, I'd have to agree with McCain's implications that it wasn't truly a tie. But just because the media might have a liberal bias doesn't mean they can't do objective polling, etc., it doesn't mean everything they say is factually incorrect, you just have to look out for the bias. My bf's mom insists they have the only fair and balanced news...I at least own that MSNBC is biased as hell! Geebers- you said it perfectly. I was like, "thank god the least crazy Repub. is in the race!" I even kind of liked John McCain. But I think he has subtly changed his views in the last 8 years, originally he was against overturning Roe v. Wade for example. And I know he was getting criticized by the conservatives in his party, but I wish he had ignored them, and gone for the moderate vote instead of moving further to the right. The thing is, I don't even see him as a real financial conservative either. I'm sorry, saving some money on earmarks, that's not that impressive, and on top of it what is he even going to argue for, more deregulation of companies? So it's just social conservatism that he's going for now, IMO, and it's obnoxious. Plus, for all his foreign policy experience, he has made it very clear that he will be a war president, and maybe Obama is naiive, but I'd at least like a little more caution after the last eight years. I never would have voted for McCain, I guess, but still, at least I liked him more before.

McCain said he opposed the measure on the grounds that the CIA should not have to follow the same guidelines as the Army, and it should have the flexibility to use valid techniques not mentioned in the field manual. “None of those techniques would entail violating the Detainee Treatment Act, which said that cruel, inhumane and degrading treatments are prohibited,” he told reporters in February, defending his vote. I'm not sure how that could possibly be more clear.

Haus, he may not have the been the cause of some of our problems, but he sure the hell hasn't helped overcome them. Where's the leadership?

I was quite happy to have McCain as a republican candidate early in the race. He was criticized quite a bit by many republicans about how liberal he was. His past record does show he has worked with both parties to get things done. My concern is that he has changed a lot of those views to pander to conservatives - including pick Palin as his VP. I almost believe that if he ran on that same stance as 2000 (and actually won with those same views) - it would be very difficult for Obama to win.

On all the major issues he is very much in lock-step with Bush. He tries to use the past to show what he stands for now...but he won't even support the idea that the CIA shouldn't torture people. Talk about going against your former self!

Yes, they are all bias, but it is completely inaccurate to suggest that all the media wants Obama to win. Secondly, a lot of the "winning" assessments have been based on the scientific polls done on independents. They said that Obama won, across the board.

haus--definitely a combo of those things you pointed out. I didn't follow politics as closely as I do now back when he was campaigning in 2000, but one of the things I liked was that he basically told Falwell and Robertson to shove it, which always stood out in my mind.

girlA - I think you'll find your views aren't taken very seriously if you think the world was perfect before Bush got elected. No party is without fault and history is constantly evolving. Bush didn't cause 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina and as a post mentioned today, a big part of the economic mess has to do with policies put in place in the 70s. Now I'm not saying he gets off scott free, thats not right either. But to lay blame solely on Republicans is not rational.

kas makes a lot of great points about McCain. It's kind of a shame (IMO) that McCain's changed a lot, because I'd feel a lot better about this election if it were McCain 2000 in the running.
