Zoning Rules Don't Consent to Sex Parties

The Party Police totally killed the vibe recently in one Maryland neighborhood.

The Party Police totally killed the vibe recently in one Maryland neighborhood. Families in the close-knit Bethesda community weren't happy that neighbor Paul Pickthrone was hosting "bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism" (BDSM) parties in his castle-like house that is decked out with dungeon apparatuses. As one participant explained, the parties attracted a diverse group:

"Men, women, transgender, heterosexuals, gays, bisexuals. Every ethnicity. White-collar and blue-collar. It's really very, very diverse — though we do have an unusually high percentage of lawyers. I don't know why."

Despite the cross-section of people, the nonkinky residents wanted to put an end to the "sex parties." But since the law does not regulate what activities people can consensually engage in at a party, the police couldn't do anything — until they found a loophole. Paul collected donations to cover the cost of hosting the party, and he donated the rest to a sexual freedom group. Since money changed hands, zoning officials declared that he needed a commercial permit. So now Paul must either cancel his parties or stop collecting donations. I'm guessing his next event will be BYOW (bring your own whip).

Would you get upset if your neighbor hosted sex parties?

Killer App: Maryland-Style Crab Dip

You know I'm a huge fan of dips and for my mom's recent birthday party, I decided to make her this insanely addictive crab dip.

You know I'm a huge fan of dips and for my mom's recent birthday party, I decided to make her this insanely addictive crab dip. She was born in Maryland and loves crab, so when I found the recipe in The New Thanksgiving Table, I knew it would be the perfect start to a dinner that celebrated her. It would also make a nice beginning to any upcoming occasion be it Thanksgiving or a holiday cocktail party. Unlike some crab dips, the natural flavor of the crab is not overshadowed by cheese and mayonnaise. Although these are ingredients in the dip, they don't over power the shellfish, instead they subtly highlight and enhance the plump and meaty chunks of crab. The lemon panko topping adds a deliciously light and crunchy texture to the dip. I'll definitely be making this luscious and easy crab dip again. You should give it a try; get the recipe now and read more

Popularity of License Plate Cloning Speeding Up!

Whether it's a prankster or a money-saver, more people have caught on to the notion of license plate cloning, or as high school students in Maryland call it, the "speed camera pimping game."

Whether it's a prankster or a money-saver, more people have caught on to the notion of license plate cloning, or as high school students in Maryland call it, the "speed camera pimping game." The trick is to replace your license plate with someone else's number (preferably belonging to a lookalike vehicle) so when you speed by a red-light or speed camera, they get the bill (or bills adding up to thousands of dollars) in the mail.

In Maryland students have used a printer and glossy paper to print out faux license plates with numbers belonging to their frenemies. They then proceed to purposefully speed by the camera, pull over, remove the fake plate, and then chuckle at the thought of a ticket showing up at a rival's house.

While I'm sure the high school kids will get caught soon, especially since they use a camera right by school, professional license plate cloners sound more like thieves than resourceful pranksters.

Does the risk of identify theft make you think twice about speed cameras?

Sex Offenders Get Scarlet Pumpkin for Halloween

As part of their parole, Maryland sex offenders must display a pumpkin sign that states "No candy at this residence."

As part of their parole, Maryland sex offenders must display a pumpkin sign that states "No candy at this residence." Along with posting the warning sign, the violent and child-sex offenders must also stay in their homes on Halloween, keep the lights off, and not answer the door. The state has distributed warnings to families, telling them to stay away from homes with the pumpkins.

The ACLU is currently challenging an identical Missouri law, claiming the provisions are too vague to enforce and add punishment to sentences already served. While parents and the community must protect children, do you think rehabilitated sex-offenders have a right to some privacy? Does fear go too far in trampling the rights of these ex-cons, or did they give up those rights?

Olympic golden boy Michael Phelps has just acquired a crave worthy pad, paying $1.69 million for a 4,080-square-foot condo overlooking Baltimore's revitalized Harborfront, according to the Maryland Leader. The pad features amenities sure to win over any young Olympian, such as a rooftop terrace with fireplace, a private screening room, a state-of-the-art gym, a clubhouse with pool tables, and a Jacuzzi. He also recently purchased the Meadowbrook Swim Club and Northwest Ice Rink in Baltimore, which he and his coach plan to turn into an elite Olympic training center, and on the car front, he has been looking at "some Aston Martins and some Maseratis." Ohhh, new money. Let's hope those endorsement checks start rolling in fast.
