Carnival is called "Carnevale" in Italy, and it's the lead-up celebration to its culmination on "Martedí Grasso," Italian for "Fat Tuesday." It's especially huge in Venice, where it's been an annual event since 1162. Festivities include masked balls, parades, pageants, jugglers, singing, dancing, fireworks, and feasts.

Actually Carnival doesn't last 46 days in Brazil. Festivities last 4 or 5 days. The period of 46 days after Carnival is called Lent and ends right before Easter. Carnival in Brazil is huge because festivities take place all over the country and that includes big events such as parades on the streets and also paid parades.
