Oprah spent $50.2 million for education, health care, and women and children advocacy last year, topping The Giving Back Fund's list of celebrity donors.
Oprah has not one, but two foundations to help her share her estimated net worth of $1 billion — Oprah's Angel Network and The Oprah Winfrey Foundation.
She topped a few other lists this year, too. Oprah came in as the highest paid person on TV, and No. 1 on Forbes Most Powerful List. It's refreshing to see that the most powerful person is also the most generous star!
To see the top four runners-up, read more.
- No. 2 Herb Alpert The trumpeter and A&M records co-founder gave $13 million to education.
- No. 3 Barbra Streisand: She gave $11 million to the environment, women's issues, civil rights, and AIDS research.
- No. 4 Paul Newman: He gave $10 million to the Scholarship for Kenyon College, his alma mater.
- No. 5 Mel Gibson: He gave $9.9 million to his church, the Holy Family Church.

It's funny, Herb Alpert has been giving money away for years and yet you seldom hear his name.
1my god where are all these liberal avvys coming from? and you all have different colors!
2I know, they're so cute, right? But with the different colors it's not so confusing. I have been meaning to tell you I love your little flag in the cupcake! I mean, I'd like it better if it were an Obama flag of course, but it's super cute.
I've been resisting temptation to use a lot of funny but negative icons I've seen. I've just always been more of a pro-my-team (as opposed to anti-the-other-guys) kind of girl.
3Torg, I know what you mean. Except I'm more of a self-promoter. It's all about me
4That is a cute picture! I like it.
5Torg... I'm not hating on the 'liberal' dots, but I really miss your apple.
6I like the apple. I'll go back to it eventually. Maybe I should make my dot green.
7I agree cab...um I mean haus. GRRRRRRRRRRR
I've meant to say that for a while. I think the little flag is classy.
8Torg, I can Photoshop you a "liberal apple" if you want, just pm me.
And yes, I have to add my thumbs up to Cab, its a cute addition.
And this story line made me think of an expression I love, I must look it up to see who said it:
"With great wealth comes great responsibility."
9Ohh, I would love that.
10I love the liberal dots -- they get my support!!! I tried it on for a day -- but I started to miss myself. LOVE THE DOTS GUYS!!!
11oprah can do no wrong in my eyes, ONLY because this woman a black woman took her misfortune (rape/molestation) and didn't let it take over her life she refused to be a statistic and became one of the richest females on this planet and why i admire her even more so because she could have allowed all that money to turn her into a greedy b, one the contrary she donates tons of my and time
12Oprah has been getting bad press so I guess we need to be reminded of her Goddess...she use to be a down to earth woman but since she has become her own God she is very full of her self and every one knows she is generous she makes that very well known.
13Yes she has over came and accomplished much but has over stepped her bounds getting into politics.
What a bunch of crap! Oprah gives up 5% of her fortune and she's "wonderful" while others give up considerably larger portions of their wealth or income and they don't get any recognition at all. Give me a break!
14ediann, you've hit it right on the head. Not only does she subscribe to Toll's "I am God" mentality but she toots her own horn by using her national forum for self promotion; while others perform their charity in private and at a considerably higher cost to themselves. This woman is a bane on society. I can't wait for the day that the truth of who she really is hits the airwaves. Then watch how fast her admirers run the opposite direction.
15Ofthe money she gives what % does a white person see, the way I see it O practices reverse racism.
16Net worth does not equal income. It includes assets like retirement, any homes, other property etc. I'm not sure if it includes companies.
So to give away 5% not of your income, but your total fortune, is a bigger deal than it sounds.
I mean, she's not lacking for anything, but she certainly gives a lot away. And she doesn't just give it away, but takes personal interest in a lot of the projects.
I guess if you HATE someone you can find a way to badmouth their charity work, but honestly, it makes the person doing the badmouthing look a little pathetic, imo.
17omg, reverse racism? ROFL. You have no idea what you're talking about.
18Oprah is an EGO maniac......it's all about her. And at one point in time it seemed she cared about women's issue's but I think she's changed....I don't think she cares anymore. She doesn't allow white economically disadvantaged girls to attend her posh school in Africa, she didn't support the more qualified candidate, my girl Hillary and she seems to only want to help women of color, or any person as long as they're not white. She's a fraud really, a phony....all the women who made her who she is and loved her and with time she has shown her true colors. She is prejudice against all white people....regardless of your economic situation, how long you've actually been in this country (I don't think the Irish ever had slaves) or what kind of person you are. I used to love her but now she makes me ill.
19Sincerely, T. Mckay
I couldn't disagree with more last few posters above.
She should get credit for helping people who need/deserve it. And who cares what her personal/ religious beliefs are?! She's a good person who does good things with the things she's been given.
20Yahoo loves to post stories about troubled liberals. I'm not saying Oprah isn't a giving person, but this story has one purpose to cover Oprah not allowing Sarah Palin on being allowed on her program. Oprah is in trouble with her core audience white 30-50+ women.
21How much of that American money was given to Americans?? I'll bet not a whole helluva lot. She may have money but her show is based on the same concept of Seinfeld, a show about nothing. The women who sit there and worship the female version of Rev. Wright ought to be deported to 1 of her charity huts in Kenya.
22Dearest popgoes the world,
23Just because you happen to see things differently than another doesn't mean you have the right to call them pathetic.....you're letting your hatred and distain overtake your post. Every individual is allowed to interpret the behavior of another.....just as 'jammer' did. There is something called 'free speech' and because you happen to disagree with it doesn't mean it's wrong or pathetic. And it's true that many many individuals give lot's of there money (more percentage wise) but without all the grand standing and posturing.
Good night, T, McKay
Again, this is where a troll emoticon would come in handy. Emoticon Gods! I beseech you! Shower us with your generosity and grant us a troll emoticon!
24
Pop! How dare you be so filled with such hatred and disdain!?! Vile, vile post!
25It's obvious these "three" posters are the same person...
26If you can't take people commenting about your posts, feel free to leave. Who is feeling endangered? if anything you're giving us a good laugh tonight, keep it coming...as long as you can take our "opinions", something you seem to have plenty of.
27I'm not an Oprah lover, but I am surely not the hater several posters in here are. If she gave $50M+ of her income last year, which was reported to be somewhere around $250M, that would mean she donated more like 20% of her gross income. Doesn't sound paltry to me.
As for her only doing things for non-whites, have you seen her staff of several hundred? First off, there are many who are white, and quite a high number of women. And, anyone who claims that she does nothing for whites, where is the proof? Speak from a position of knowledge, not assumption. Most of the deeds she does on an ongoing basis aren't going to be picked up by the media.
Politically, she has, for the very first time, come out in support of a Presidential candidate. However, that has not been a subject on her daytime talk show, nor does she intend it to become one. Also, she has admitted to voting across political parties in years past. The only way this whole Gov. Palin mess should have any teeth is if she invited Obama or Biden onto the show and refused to allow the other party the same exposure and opportunity. If her core audience runs away for this, so be it. I hope she stands her ground on this one.
As for overstepping ones boundaries in the political arena, I wasn't aware there was a crime in voicing support for a particular candidate. Why is she not able to do so when so many other well-known celebrities have done virtually the same things for years and years? And, she is a U.S. Citizen and has that right. At over 50yrs old, I'm sure she has simply decided to stop caring so much about what the hell everybody else thinks and is starting to do more of what she wants. More power to her.
28I'm not sure if I have accidently enter into some pre-school site, given the highly articulate post of both livvylove & kastarte2....but I can assure you both I am only one person T. McKay and I would not disguise myself or make multiple post, pretending to be someone else....perhaps this is what someone at your level of understanding employs when they feel challenged? But seriously grow up. If you want to talk nonsense, please go into a chat room somewhere.
29Thanks T. McKay
Are you people for real? What kind of post is that buckybooth?
30COME ON ? Even though I disagree with the supporter of Oprah.....I can't imagine sinking to this level of discourse.
Sincerely, T. McKay
Trolls are funny.
31Yes, I am vile, and I am against free speech.
To the new posters, we're a tight community here. We're not like the other boards where people can come on and be idiots and it will be tolerated.
Go ahead, post what you want. You are just wasting your time, and giving us a good laugh in the process.
32To you people hating on oprah only donating $50 million out of her $250 million income last year I just have one question for you, how much money did you donate out of your income?
33Oprah may the most giving celebrity but she is the most ANNOYING celebrity. When she supported Barack Obama she went down on my list. I am anxious for the day when her show is cancelled. But I must say, I do commend her generosity to the general public. Unfortunately, we have to hear about all her generosoties from her. I think a lot of her generosity is for the cameras. Also, the fact she will not interview the republican party until after the election is a travesty. Just more liberal bias in the media.
34Clearly, trying to have any kind of adult conversation on this site is a waste of time. I hadn't realized this when I began posting to this site and hence I have wasted a bit of time here.
35I've said all I wanted to say and find no other articulate individuals present on this site and so I'll leave it to the individuals who have such darn cute cartoon characters on their postings.....and such nice emblems over their names. It would appear that you appear to spend a good deal of time 'on line' perhaps you should consider getting a life or learning to actually articulate your feelings rather than the cartoon characters? Maybe with a little more schooling?
Just a thought : )
bye T. McKay
Well atleast she gives, that's my point...but.....Am I a saint if I give a homeless person $20 if my net worth was $110? Same damn thing! Everyone calls these rich people saints when they give what is equivalent to a quarter to these foundations or causes. Why does someone need billions of dollars to begin with. Great, she earned it and she is atleast doing some good but c'mon, you see people called saints because they work to give and give everything to those who need, not to live as a Billionaire and give chump change, which by the way is tax deductable, and then be called a saint. Yes! Yes! Yes! She is atleast one of the stupid rich people that does some good in this world, but look at her home, her jewels, her cars, her bags of cash, her wealth....If I was fortunate to have a talk show and not have to work hard 60 hours per week, going into financial crisis, living paycheck to payckeck bareley able to put food on the table, I would live with what I needed to buy a decent home, put my kids through college and have financial security for my life, my kids life and their kids life. Maybe that would equal $10 million. But a billion dollars, jesus christ give me a break...how many families can these rich stupid celebrities feed, how many lives can be saved. But, call me crazy, I'm the only one who don't care that a rich billionaire gives pennies of their fortune. Atleast Jesus taught to give up your riches and live for the afterlife. Where is your money when you die? Money changes people, money is the root of all evil. Have fun spending all your Billions Oprah and every other rich idiot on the planet! Sincereley, $60k per year middle class looser.
36It was that easy? Sweet. Take your friends with you when you go!
37We need to find out what other site linked to this story and ask them to please never link to us again. Seriously. I'm kind of amused but mostly my sensibilities are offended.
38Seriously, we have no life but you join a blog site just to smear Oprah for an evening?
39I Love You Oprah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
40We're linking from YahooNews.
41Stupid Yahoo news.
42yawn.....troll......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
43You RACIST idiots who slam Oprah for being a KIND, INTELIGENT AND EXTREMELY GIVING BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMAN DISGUST ME!!!
All you've got is HATE in your heart and must live a hard life in order to hate someone so much who is trying to help this sad, sad world.
What are you doing with your sad, pitiful lives to help this country besides sit at your sad, little computers and attack this woman because you have nothing else better to do on a Saturday night?
GET A LIFE!!!
Don't hate Oprah for being a strong, intelligent and beautiful black woman.
If you're that threatened by her, than LEAVE THE COUNTRY because she's here to stay!!!
44My passion is wedding talk, and Jesus said the poor widow who gave all that she had gave more than the rich who had riches overflowing. The end.
45Yea..no comment, right? Only speaking from the middle class loosers in the world. God forbid, she only has $950 Million left..what can that buy? Hmmmm.....10,555 E class Mercedez Benz'(I can't even afford to buy one) -or- 63.33 $1.5 million homes (Which would take me 25 years to make at $60k per year - or - 9500 students to attend Harvard Law School at $100,000 - or - the sad reality that it would take 55,361 people to make that much money earning minimum wage. So, again call me crazy...yes she is so rich, rich, rich, rich, rich, rich and gives a penny of her fortune when I give what I can from my pathetic $60k per year job and no one notices, no press, no one calling me a saint, no yahoo news, no nothing....don't hate me when I have something to say.
46As a first time member I'll just state some missing facts. Oprah had an opportunity to have a balanced show when she had Obama on. Is said publicly said she would not have any others. As an important national figure with a powerful TV show I felt she should have been balanced in her approach. She has shown time and time again where her true beliefs lie. Of course she has white staff by the hundreds and never is perceived a slave owner. What would the world think if a high powered white woman had hundreds of black staff? She gives a lot of money to very good causes (if you look up the causes you will find most of them black but not all). She is smart and has been a beacon of hope to many just not someone I would ever waste my time watching. When she made her political statement by excluding anyone but her "guy" I made the choice not to listen, read, watch or subscribe to anything Oprah. For those who think this woman has a golden heart for the world...she does not.
47I'm sure Oprah gives more than you so you need to calm down.
48Oprahs only goal is to make another "billion" dollars and as a percentage gives less than I do.
49She had Obama on BEFORE he threw his hat in the ring - I know I watched the show.
When she made the decision to endorse Obama she said (a year ago) that she wasn't going to use her show for political gain for either side.
Since that endorsement -- no political/presidential candidate has been on her show.
Trust me lady -- this will not break Oprah - she is a media power house and if she were to retire tomorrow -- she'd do just fine - with or without you.
