John Cusack Gets His Move On in New McCain-Is-Bush Ad

Actor John Cusack has filmed a fast and furious political TV ad, challenging viewers to explain how John McCain is any different than President George W. Bush. He brings up issues like the GI Bill, ties to war profiteers, and children's health care. Check it out below.

Move On wants supporters to help raise $70,000 to put the ad in front of swing voters. Do you think John's message can influence swing voters?

With President Bush's approval ratings at an all time low, will voters be able to form an opinion of Republican John McCain? I wonder why McCain doesn't do more to separate himself from Bush on the issues.

In general, I try to avoid most posts about the election and campaigning, because I just don't have the stomach for it. I have to admit that it was John Cusack that got me to click on this link. Didn't care for him in Say Anything, but I did love High Fidelity. :-) Both parties are guilty of running sleazy, negative campaigns and have been doing this for many years. However, I think it's getting progressively worse and more common. I understand that one party can't feasibly run a (solely) positive issues-based campaign when the other is running a negative name-calling one because that puts the former party at an extreme disadvantage. It's an ugly cycle that both sides have to agree to end. It's these sort of games that causes people to lose faith in the process.

Go back to Memorial Day and the anti-Obama ad, the one with the guy who complained about Obama not meeting with Patraeus. Read the responses and the number of people here who jumped on the not meeting with Patraeus issue based on that ad - as did McCain a day or two later. Try then to come back and justify any righteous anger at the Move-On ad. "Does anyone else get the feeling that now, more than ever, people (on all sides of the issues) are so completely convinced of their own righteousness that they have no connection with people who have differing views, and hence feel that because they are (in their own minds) so clearly right that taking the other guy down by any means necessary is acceptable, or even noble?" Actually, no. And I don't believe that everyone consciously chooses what they believe. What I believe developed over time, with experience, observation and reflection.

I think that we all basically want the same things for our country, and we just differ on how to achieve them. I think that most people on this board that prefer a candidate think that the economy would be better, there would be peace in the Middle East, and less Americans would die because of war and/or terrorism if their candidate was elected. We are all coming from a good place, and I think that IS noble. Is admirable to feel passionately about the direction of your country! So even if you are a McCain supporter, I admire you for taking an active part in our democracy. I agree with Syako that I prefer Citizen Sugar best when we can all keep things light and respectful, even when we disagree.

I agree Kim. I remember my strategic management prof in college, his favorite saying was "perception is reality" meaning whatever someone perceives, its reality to them so you have to work with them within the confines of that.I have thought of that saying on numerous occasions.

The problem with this ad is it only tells have the story. It doesn't say anything about why McCain voted the way he did. Did he vote against the healthcare for children? Yes, because familes who made up to $80,000/year could qualify for said healthcare for their children. People who make that much, can afford their own healthcare.

Democrats could not effecttively fight against the Willie Horton ads and the swift boat ads. Talk about half truths and no truths. Democrats did not push hard enough to ensure that Gore served as President after he was elected. So now Demos have alot of material to work with. This ad (forget about if you hate the actor) is biased against the GOP candidate, of course, it's an ad. But as far as I can see, there is nothing untrue in it. It is showing ways that Bush and McCain are alike. Why in the world would it want to show ways that McCain is different? It's an ad! And it is nothing like some of the shameful GOP ads of the past, nothing like.

i think it's pretty clear that he's not saying bush & mccain are the same. he's bringing up a few points, points that happen to be VERY important to many voters, and saying they share the same opinions on these issues... its a valid comparison.
