J.D. Salinger Dies at 91 — Who Is Your Favorite Character?

Legendary author J.D. Salinger has died at the age of 91. Although the reclusive author shared little of himself with the public, generations grew up with a deep connection to his characters.

I always loved Holden Caufield, the cynical teenager whose fictional rite of passage became part of many real-life rites of passage. But many of Salinger's female characters were compelling too — from the unphony female characters in Catcher in the Rye to Franny Glass, who suffers an existential crisis in Franny and Zooey. And apparently the women in his books had real life counterparts — at the age of 53, Salinger had a year-long relationship with an 18-year-old Joyce Maynard, offering insight into why Salinger's heroines are chaste and captivating young women.

Out of all his characters, who is your favorite?
