Female university students in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh can no longer wear jeans or any other Western clothes to school. It's all for their own protection, of course — officials say that expelling women who dress like this is "the only way to stop crime against women."
If the schools really wanted to stop sexual harassment, they should probably go after the men who perpetrate it. The backwards logic makes me think this rule is really about preserving conservative values against the invasion of western culture, and I might be right: Hindu extremist groups have increasingly protested phenomena like women drinking in bars or publicly displaying affection.
Regardless of the motivation, the stated logic behind this rule — that men cannot control their actions and it's somehow a woman's fault if she is a target of sexual abuse — is nothing new or unique to India.

ugh that is SO ridiculous
1I have family in U.P (Uttar Pradesh), and I visit them ever year or so. Though I have noticed that girls in western attire get hit on, or shouted names at, more often than girls in Indian clothing, the fact remains that all young girls in general are harassed by young guys. I don't think the problem is in the women's clothes, it's more in the men's attitudes. There should be some punishment for verbally harassing girls on the streets- as of now, people just watch and do nothing, as 'boys will be boys'.

3i agree. nobody deserves sexual harassment, particularly at school, for the way they look. they need to start correcting the men who perpetrate the harassment, not these women who are just trying to go about their business.
4while its defenitely backwards to ban jeans, i would much rather cover up a bit more when i visit india rather then deal with the guys there.. they really are quite nasty with their cat calls and all. and since little is ever done against guys, why actually go through the whole harrasment problem if you just avoid it in the first place. thats my opinion. anyway i only go to india once every few years for a few weeks so i can tolerate no jeans for that long lol.
5Oh, yes! It's like how whenever you eat schmores (shmores? smores? sp? idk), the crime rate goes up. That's why people don't eat schmores in India. Because eating melted chocolaty marshmallows gives people sugar highs, and the absurdity of eating melted chocolaty marshmallows between two graham crackers like a sandwich causes people to lose all reason and commit crimes they never would've even though of had their minds not been poisoned with Western campfire dining nonsense. If you don't think about it, it makes sense.

8Nothing will change. They still view women as objects and if a woman dresses sexy then she must be asking for it. It's a disgusting attitude but it is what it is. I don't see it changing anytime soon.
