First Woman Gondolier(a): Giorgia Boscolo

After 900 years of being an all boys' club, Venice's canals welcomed a woman in 2009. Twenty-something Giorgia Boscolo, the daughter of a gondolier, became the first woman to officially man the banana-shaped boats. The word for female gondolier — gondoliera — didn't even exist before Giorgia passed the rigorous qualifying exams.
