I Think My Brother Is Depressed

Dear Sugar
2 years ago my older brother lost his job and found out that his fiancee was cheating on him all in the same month. He was heart broken, and was dealing with a bruised ego all at once. He tried dating again and but didn't seem to click with anyone. He also never found a job quite as good as his last one. He sleeps a lot, is grumpy, and often refuses to hang out with his friends and family members anymore. I'm trying to be understanding but, after all this time, he's wearing me down. What can I do to help him? Sisterly Supportive Samarie

Dear Sisterly Supportive Samarie
Your brother needs professional help. Depression is a real illness. People who are depressed can't just "pull themselves together" and feel better. It takes time and treatment because even the smallest tasks can make them feel down and overwhelmed. Something you should know is that it has nothing to do with you not helping him enough, so don't feel guilty about feeling worn out from him. Understand that his illness is affecting everyone close to him and they are most likely feeling as helpless are you are. You can find him a good psychiatrist and get him to begin his therapy process. In addition, just continue to do what you are doing for him. Being a patient, supportive and good listener is a great way to help him through his recovery.
