I-Fairy Officiates Wedding Ceremony in Japan

Robot Officiates Wedding Ceremony in Japan

We've heard of people marrying inanimate objects, and now inanimate objects are marrying people! This weekend a Japanese couple said "I do" while a four-foot robot with plastic pigtails and flashing eyes officiated the ceremony. What guests could not see, however, was a man behind a black curtain controlling the robot's words and all 18 of its movements.

It's called the I-Fairy. And in Japan, where robotic innovation is so valued the government assists its development, robots are stiffly stepping into everyday life. A major marketing push by its manufacturer Kokoro (also the bride's employer) is to thank; however, at 6.3 million yen ($68,000) an I-Fairy, I don't see it going mainstream soon.

If this forward-thinking couple wants kids, they're in luck. Honda, the car maker, recently came out with a walking, child-shaped robot!
