What Do You Hate About the Holidays?

It's Humbug Day, which means it's time to air your holiday rage. Whether it's a crowded mall or awkward parties, there are plenty of gripes to have about the holidays.

I almost exclusively Internet shop, so crowds aren't my complaint, but no longer receiving more than I give is. Selfish? Probably. But that's what today's for! What brings out the Scrooge in you?

I get that too, Yoga. It's just annoying. I have no plans to be a mother anytime soon. BTW, thanks for that sentiment. Kia too. I really do appreciate it.

Dexaholic - that so true! I would like to add the "so when are you guys going to have some babies?" It's like they don't listen when we say we don't want children. We get a lecture on "God's plan" and how we'll change our minds.

I work in hospitality AND retail, so my crankyness goes through the roof come xmas.I hate the idiot customers who leave their shopping to the last possible minute (ie, 10 minutes before close on xmas eve)and then chew me out because the shop doesn't stock something.I hate that I have to work on christmas instead of going to the lunch my mum has spent two months planning.I hate the misconception that christmas = weight gain.>:(I love christmas but this year it's not gonna be so great. I have to work on the 25th and the 26th so I wont be able to partake in the christmas cheer until the 27th, by that time the ham would have been eaten.

toty - you heat up christmas? ;) What I hate about the holidays would probably have to be commercialism, like many others have said. Also the fact that everyone is OBESSED with gifts, gifts gifts. Pretty much every year, my grandmother and mother keep bugging me to come up with a christmas list. I don't like making lists! Just surprise me. (Although by this time next year, I'll be prepared and give them a list, sheesh!)

My mom and I don't have the Christmas spirit, she heats it because her mom alway made it miserable for her, and I don't know why I'm not crazy about Christmas, I should love it because my mom always tried her best to make it super special for me and my brother(However, I don't heat Christmas). Anyways, not having that Christmas spirit makes it kind of fun. We go out to eat, exchange gifts and then go to bed. This definitely takes all the pressure of the holidays out.

I hate that my bf's mother expects me to just abandon my family to partake in all of her family traditions on Christma day. It's not like we're married so for now I'll stick to my family thank you very much.

Having to actually deal with my father and his family. I try to avoid them throughout the rest of the year, but I always feel obligated to see them all at the Christmas Eve family party. "Maybe it'll be different this year...." Yea. Right. And this year, because I simply don't have the money to fly home, my (mean) aunt took me out of the grab bag because "there was no point." HUH? It would not have been hard for me to send a gift card to a cousin! Or vice versa! I wanted to send in a gift, if for no other reason than to remind them that I'm actually in the family! Ugh. And I miss my mommy. Not a great Christmas this year.

I hate people who can't get over the commercialism. Almost everything at some point, is going to be exploited for profit. It's sad, but its how it goes. But that doesn't mean buying your kid/family/partner/whatever christmas gifts means you are giving up your soul to big businesses. There ARE ways to avoid most of the bullshit. Don't go overboard, buy toys/gifts that are needed, and yes, kids DO need to have toys, its part of learning and imagination. This doesn't include teenagers with cell phones, but you get the point. I bought my daughter her birthday and christmas gifts months ahead of time, I didnt shop christmas deals, and you will NEVER see me waiting in line at 6am to get 20 bucks off a wii. I also don't agree with giving gifts to coworkers, part of the tradition for us is just family... they don't need some cheesy half assed gift just becuase its christmas.

Well, when it comes to people's spending habits, generally, I accept their choices. They earned their money. They can spend it any way they please. Likewise, I feel the same way with MY own money. :)As far as my holiday complaint, I generally don't like the holiday season. :) I find it stressful on many fronts -- the shopping, crowds, traveling, forced socializing, etc. LOL. Bah humbug.

The worst offenders are celebs who purchase $200,000+ dog houses for a few 5 lb dogs when that's enough money to help a shelter to do a renovation. Such a sad waste of money.

oh Yoga, I did that too with my cats last year -- they all wore reindeer ears (for um 2 seconds, until I snapped the photo and they pulled them off..). IMO -- the occasional silly hat on your pet is fun ... hundreds/ thousands of dollars for a pet's wardrobe is overkill, at best.

runningesq, I totally agree about the whole juicy sweatsuits or chanel collars on pets! You could sponsor a pet adoption with that money! I will admit - I love my two dogs like children. I had a holiday family photo taken of my hubby and I each holding our dogs and the dogs each had a santa hat on. We included this with our x-mas cards. But my cards were purchased from the ASPCA and the cost of the photo went to the local animal shelter. We wouldn't have done it had it not been for a good cause. I've been making gifts (knitting scarves/hats) for family and friends this year. I'll let you know after the holidays if people are appreciative of them or wanted something more materialistic.

I agree with the criticism of over commercializing Christmas. Christmas at least here in the U.S. seems like it's become more and more about materialism and less and less about meaning. I also find it ironic that so many retailers want to reap financial rewards of doing business with Christmas but they won't let you say Merry Christmas. Honestly can't they say both (Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas). You kill two birds with one stone and every one is happy. I'm a very pragmatic person, lol.
