Hating Valentine's Day

4 Reasons to Hate Valentine's Day, and 1 Reason to Love It

Maybe it's inevitable, but no other holiday seems to inspire more hate than Valentine's Day. Couples feel obligated; singles feel left out. There are plenty of good reasons — at least four — to hate it. Here's some to get you started!

  • It's not a real holiday: And by that I mean nobody gets the day off. We could all feel the heartwarming red a little more if it were a national holiday.
  • There's pressure to be original: Whether you've just started dating or are repeat Valentines, the pressure to do something unique but not sappy aggravates even the most inventive romantics.
  • Yet, commercialism says to conform: We all know Valentine's Day was created by ad guys like Don Draper to sell cards and hearts and chocolates, so it's hard to get into the spirit of a day so contrived.
  • It's expensive: Not only does it not come with the full sleeping-in privileges of a real holiday, but it dictates that you buy presents.

Since Valentine's Day isn't going anywhere, we might as well look for candy-wrapper lining. Here's one reason anyone can love it.

  • It's an excuse to indulge: If society says celebrate then whether you're single or attached, it's time to relax. Go shopping, eat something(s) indulgent, or spend the day in bed watching movies and reading trash. After all, it is a "holiday"!
