Halloween Theory: Ghosts, Goblins, and Breakups?

A bunch of my girl friends have this theory about Halloween. According to them, if you've been dating someone but aren't sure whether you want to be with them or even if it's going anywhere, then Halloween marks a pivotal time. You either have to cut it off right now or you'll be stuck with them through the entirety of Winter. Admittedly it's a generalization and more directed at people who haven't officially committed yet, but I do think there’s some truth to the idea that people like to avoid a breakup during the holidays. So let’s hear it ladies: Are my girlfriends crazy or does the idea of being trapped until after the New Year ring true to you too?

Well it is weird that I broke up with my boyfriend October 31st!! I've been thinking about it for a few weeks and it just seemed like the right night. Spooooky

I've heard this before. Umm, my senior thesis is due this week, so I'm actually going to *start* dating this week. I haven't had time up until now! ;)

well i think that it kind of does make sense. halloween is right at the beginning of the holiday season when you either spend holidays together or you go to see families and all that and if you see your family you know that you're going to get asked the question if you're dating someone - and it's just that much more complicated to have to define things if you don't know for sure. besides that - a lot of people like to make their new years plans somewhat in advance and you have to decide if you're going to do the 'single' thing or if you're going to do something together, so if you don't figure it out now, then it's kind of too late...right?

I've never heard of this before, but it kind of makes sense. I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I broke up with someone the day before New Year's Eve (sadly, it was also the day before his birthday). I felt horrible about it, but I had to make a decision to either smile through it and be fake or hurt his feelings but at least be honest. We had only been dating a month or so, but thinking about it still makes me feel horribly guilty...

Yeah, I can see how you might not be serious enough with someone to go ahead and meet your whole family for the holidays and things like that. But if that's the case why don't you just spend some time apart for the holidays. And I don't think it's a good idea to just stay with someone for the holidays so you won't be alone if you don't actually want to be with them, that's not very nice. The only time I ever kind of did this, is with my ex. I was thinking about breaking up but I couldn't decide whether I wanted to or not...well, I wanted to, but I couldn't quite bring myself to do it yet. So the holidays were an excuse for me to draw it out, I was like, well, it would just be mean to break up now, he would have to deal with christmas and new years and all the family questions and drama, etc. So I waited until after all that was over with. It was a bad idea though, I wouldn't do that again, if I want to break up with someone, I will do it when I feel like doing it.

I've heard of this, it's called a halloweenie. Where some coward decides it's better to stick with you then to be alone because the holidays are fast approaching. Don't do me any favors by sticking around.

Well I think it could be true. The holidays do make some couples get back together or it does make sense that you may want to stay with the person you are seeing now because of the holidays. so weird but true.

The holidays are more about my family and food than my boyfriend, so I don't mind if I'm not with someone. Sometimes it can be better if you break up with someone during that time since there's a lot to do and family gatherings to go to.

I have never of this before, but can understand..the holidays carry such emotional weight for some people it would make sense to make relationship decisions based on some of that..

I have never heard that one before. Sounds like your girl friends are crazy. No holiday superstition is going to make me feel trapped.
