Hagee Apologizes to Catholics, But Not New Orleans
John Hagee, the controversial Evangelical pastor who endorsed John McCain, will issue a letter of apology to Catholics today saying, "Out of a desire to advance greater unity among Catholics and Evangelicals in promoting the common good, I want to express my deep regret for any comments that Catholics have found hurtful. After engaging in constructive dialogue with Catholic friends and leaders, I now have an improved understanding of the Catholic Church, its relation to the Jewish faith, and the history of anti-Catholicism."

Jillness - I agree, and think that McCain didn't vet the reverend before seeking the endorsement. Big mistake.

Just to be clear, McCain has made clear that these negative sentiments do not represent him or the Republican party <b>several</b> times. Accepting Hagee's endorsement was wrong on his part, but he has since distanced himself, more than once, from Hagee's views.

The proper way to offer an apology is to admit that YOU are in the wrong for saying what you said, not the Catholics for hearing what you said.How about, "I apologize for saying hurtful things about Catholics and The Catholic Church, The Pope, and the Magisterium. Please forgive me."He is definitely an idiot and an ethnic and religious racist.

UnDave, I agree with what you say, but at the same time why would McCain seek the endorsement of a man who is so hateful towards Catholics and homosexuals?I think that just letting his comments slide by while seeking his endorsement sends the wrong picture to people who might have similar beliefs. I think that McCain needs to make clear that these types of sentiments do not reflect him, and that they aren't helpful to the Republican party. It is like the silent parent whose child is being obnoxious. If you don't take a strong stand against hate speech, your silence is supportive of it.

My thought is "Who cares?" Hague is an idiot whose interpretation of the Bible serves only him. Those people tend to gather followers, and then destroy those followers. Don't drink the Kool-aid

He said it before McCain's endorsement, and then repeated it after the endorsement. If he was really sorry, he wouldn't be making these SAME comments multiple times. I don't hold it against McCain, but Hagee is just a really nasty person from my perspective.
