What's Your Girlie Guilty Pleasure?

One of the writers of HBO's Girls, Deborah Schoeneman, examines the girlie-girl trend in her latest ebook, Woman-Child. With nail art, cutesy celebrities like Zooey Deschanel, and YA novels becoming increasingly popular with our generation of grown-up women, Deborah wonders if we're all trying to relive our younger years and escape the realities and responsibilities of marriage, babies, and a tough job market by singing along to Katy Perry. While Deborah looks into the possible causes of girlie-girl power — struggling economy, later-in-life marrying age — she also explores the positives and negatives of older women listening to Taylor Swift, throwing board game parties, and dressing like a Harajuku girl.
As a professional woman who also happens to be a fan of YA lit, sparkly nails, and nostalgia from my teen years, I think there's a healthy balance between getting in touch with our girlie side and accepting the responsibilities of adulthood. In the words of the faux documentary The Nail Artists (mentioned on Zooey's uber-girlie blog Hello Giggles): "I can have a job AND paint my nails. Any girl can. Any. Girl. Can." So click through these "woman-child" trends and tell us, what's your girlie guilty pleasure?
