Have You Been Tested For STDs?

Now that we know 10 to 25 percent of people who have herpes don't know it, it seems safe to assume that many people aren't getting tested for STDs. It's no surprise really. You often have to ask your doctor for it, and most people won't if they don't have symptoms. And, whether we admit or not, who really wants to know?

You all obviously realise that testing for HSV1 and HSV2 (Herpes Simplex Virus) is never part of any standard STD test right? That is why it is so commonly spread. The majority of people who host the virus are not even aware of it due to being asymptomatic. I would advise that you all specifically request the Herpes Type test next time you are at your doctors. But then again you don't really want to know, do you? ;)

I have many times throughout college. Stopped when I was living with my boyfriend. He broke my heart and at my next check-up (6 months after the break-up) I did. He had given me an STD, apparently he had cheated. It was extremely embarrassing to tell the new BF :(

I've never gotten tested and I don't have too. I'm 100% safe from getting STD's. I bet it's pretty worrisome for some people who have too get tested.

xxstardust, as I posted in the other thread.. you can get HSV1 vaginally if your boyfriend has the virus orally. You can contract HSV1 through innocent contact (a lot of people like to say you can get it from your grandmother when you are a baby, if she kisses you on the lips).. and it's true. This is still an STI & upwards of 80% of the country by the age of 50 have HSV1.

Yep, I get tested annually with pap. But if i do change boyfriends/switch partners between paps, I still get tested. What's there to lose to get tested to find out if you caught anything or not? But if you don't get tested, either you didn't catch anything, or you find out too late.

ALL THE TIME! Even in a relationship, there are plenty of diseases that can lie dormant without symptoms for months... plus I love the phone call from the GYN saying "you're all clean." Nothing sexier than that. :)

I get tested when I have my pap. Just a little swab, you know, in case. I'm in a monogamous relationship and I love my partner to bits, but getting a test never hurts anyone. hypnoticmix, mad props to you! I wish more people were as honest!

I voted No, but just remembered I am tested every time I get a pap. I've never gone just to get tested. I've only had one partner and he gets tested regularly because he's in the military.

I always wanted to ... but everytime I get to the clinic I start getting really sick! ... I've only had unprotected sex once in my life, like a year ago, and every saturday I try to get tested and I get really scared! ...

I have during my annual pap just because I know it's better to be safe. Even thought it has been years since I said, sure why don't you test me for STDs while you're at it

I know a couple of people who do not test. They say they just don't want to know. I would say that's fine if it only effected you however what about your sex partners? What if you do catch something and pass it on to them? Remember knowledge is power. I've been hiv+ for over twelve years and yes there were a few people who said thanks but no thanks but for the most part my sex life really didn't suffer one bit for being honest about my condition. Why? Again, because knowledge is power. If you wrap your self in fear that is part of your life that is paralyzed.

After seeing the skank I was cheated on with, I got tested ASAP. God, she was nasty...My last test was about a year ago at the beginning of my pregnancy. They test you here so the staff at hospital knows their safe at birth.

It's a good idea to get tested whether you think you are at risk or not. Some STDs (chlamydia, gonorrhea) can linger for a long time in people's bodies without causing any symptoms, but still causing major damage to the reproductive system. This can even lead to sterility. I know I'd be devastated if I wasn't able to have babies-- so for me, its worth the 10 minute appointment.

Every year during my annual appt. (although I'm in a monogamous relationship and have only ever had sex with my boyfriend). I made him get tested too at a free clinic!

xxstardust, i totally believe you and your relationship sounds solid - but just out of habit, it's always good to get tested, and they might not just do it when you get your pap so just ask...if it makes you uncomfortable, ask casually "do you test for anything while you're down there?" and then she will ask "do you want me to?" and you should say YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

I'm assuming I'll probably be tested when I get my first pap smear next month (yes, I'm young enough not to have had a pap yet) regardless of whether I ask for it or not, so I will be getting tested. We were young enough when we started dating that lying about being his first is highly unlikely. In our current situation, we literally spend almost our entire day together. We're college students who live together and, as we have the same major (which we're nearing the end of, so we're running out of classes to choose from!) we take all of the same classes. We eat our meals together, we do homework together .. if he was sleeping around, he'd have to be sneaking out in the middle of the night. Or have cloned himself.

I get tested regularly, just out of routine. I'm the kind of girl who wears a hazmat suit with any partners, but still, I definitely want to know if I have any health issues to take care of. I mean, you can contract a disease whether you've had one partner or 100. Everyone should know what his or her status is.

Guys... lying is not the problem. You can have a lot of stuff without never finding out about them. PLEASE do get tested! And you all know that you can get all STDs from unprotected oral sex as well, right?
