LGBT Community Celebrates Gay Pride Around the World

The LGBT community and its straight allies were feeling the gay pride this weekend as the end of LGBT Pride Month went off with a bang with celebrations in cities from San Francisco to New York City. June was chosen for pride month in remembrance of New York's Stonewall riots of 1969, when police raided a Greenwich Village bar known to be occupied by the city's underground gay community, who decided to take a stand against the frequent raids. The West Coast commemorated 42 years of gay pride with San Francisco's two-day celebration and parade last weekend, and New York City's festivities — with a parade grand marshaled by Cyndi Lauper — marked the first anniversary of same-sex marriage being legalized in the state.

San Francisco's "global equality" themed celebration hailed itself as being the largest LGBT gathering in the country, complete with a parade, dance parties, concerts, and celebrity grand marshals Sarah Silverman, Glee's Dot Jones, and drag performer Carmen Carrera. The gay community has had some big wins over the last year, with gay marriage legalization in New York and Barack Obama's public support, so check out the rainbow-colored highlights from the weekend now!
