I was listening to a Mexican journalist on NPR's Fresh Air last night, he was talking about the drug problem and how entrenched the cartels are in Mexican life, politics, and business. Its pretty crazy. It was also interesting to learn that Mexico has very strict gun laws (you can only get a gun if you are in the military) so most are coming from the US. Also only 1 in 100 criminals go to prison for their crimes, so the judicial system is no deterrant to criminal activity. In fact, crime really does seem to pay in Mexico.
1Blagovitch - bad taste. Too bitter I think...allowed to simmer too long maybe.
2So how do we change that? Mor importantly, how do we keep the criminal fringe in Mexico out of the US, and how do we get the Mexican government to help with that? I would think it would be a good thing for them to help with the smuggling of arms into Mexico, given their strict anti-gun laws.
3That's what Obama seems to be suggesting - there is an article about it on CNN today. Here is a taste of his plan:
The new federal plan, developed by the departments of Justice and Homeland Security, calls for doubling the number of border security task force teams and moving a significant number of other federal agents, equipment and resources to the border. It also involves greater intelligence sharing aimed at cracking down on the flow of money and weapons into Mexico that helps fuel the drug trade, senior administration officials said.
4That's what we are doing on our end. What is Mexico doing? I don't think we will stop this flow on our own.

7Hey as long as U.S. company's are making money from the indirect export of guns to other countries there's going to be a foot drag until enough people are killed at once or as is what's happening now it's jumping into our back yard. You see as long as it was safely enough away and mainly Mexico's bad problem it was safe to turn a blind eye but now that it's practically on top of us we have not choice but to say sorry to the gun money flow roll up our sleeves and actually deal with the problem.
Please please please reform the tax code. If there's anything beside trigonometry that goes over my head it's the tax code.
