It might be the terrible technological bratty kid of the marriage of technology and too much Summer free time — get a load of this trend: using Google Earth to pinpoint local houses with surreptitious swimming pools in the backyard, kids are then logging on to Facebook to poke their buddies into an impromptu and illegal pool party.

It's called "dipping" and pool owners are steaming mad. For one illicit swimfest event posted, invitations were sent to 500 users. Police say pool owners have woken up to find strange kids in the pool, come home from work to find their pools littered with beer cans — or worse. Police are trying to crack down on the trespassing pool crawls saying, “We are advising owners of swimming pools to be on their guard and extra vigilant. We would also warn prospective swimmers that using someone else’s pool is trespassing and therefore illegal.”
Does the tech-savvy prank cross the line from harmless fun to criminal mischief? Should networking sites be held responsible for invitations to illegal activity posted? Is the idea genius, even if it's not advisable?

Shudoo
here's what you do: when you leave for work in the morning, grab a hair dryer, plug it in, and toss it into the pool. it's just that easy.
1I'm in love with that idea, yesteryear!
2What is WRONG with young people these days?? How is that fun??
This is hilarious!
I always wondered what was stopping kids from using pools that belonged to people who were always out of town, or pools that are at hotels or apartment complexes that are closed at night.
3I wonder if one of the teens were hurt - would their parents try to sue the home owners. Sad. I swear the word respect is becoming non existent.
"War should be the politics of last resort. And when we go to war, we should have a purpose that our people understand and support." Colin Powell
4That's horrible! Some of my peers are so idiotic that it's hard to imagine this stuff!
And it's true, what bellaressa said - if any of the kids got hurt, the owners of the pool would be sued, even if they didn't know the party was taking place! Ridiculous.
5What I want to know is how do I get invited to the next party?
6I know its bad but I think its hysterical! Kids today know how to use every weapon in the technology arsenal.
Makes you long for the days of the random kegger in the woods...
7Last year kids in my neighborhood were breaking into newly built homes in the middle of the night and throwing parties. I can't remember the crazy term that they used.
8I remember an incident from several years ago. I was pretty young so I don't recall all the details. Teenagers snuck into a back yard to use the pool. The owner woke up and thought someone was trying to break in. He grabbed his gun and several minutes later a one of the teens was shoot. This is a dangerous game to play.
9it is a chain, they are crazier because we let them star young...
it's like they hit puberty at 9 so, at 14 they are so bored of life, morons...
boundaries people! aaaaaaargh
10Nadia - this is a liberal website, they don't know the meaning of boundaries..
11undave: what?
12Oh, every time someone invents a new technology and kids find a way to create mischief, everyone always decries the downfall of morality. It's just kids having fun. When I was a kid we used to play "Dip and Dash" in our neighborhood. It's the same thing.
13i find this hilarious... i could totally see this happening in my hometown.
14"I know its bad but I think its hysterical! "
haha, I am such a bad person. I immediately thought this was hilarious. The article is from the UK, but I wonder if it will catch on here. Like, say, major vacation home places like Lake Havasu, where old ppl don't stay in the summer and all those nice homes are left open... just Google Earth, investigate the vacancy possibility, and have a party.
Yes, I'd prosecute them, but it doesn't mean I don't respect ingenuity!
15it's funny until someone gets hurt.
16I just don't understand peoples desire to mess with things that don't belong to them. If it's not yours leave it alone, don't touch it, you don't use people's things w/out their permission it's just wrong.
Genius, yes. Criminal, yes.
17I broke into our high school so 9 friends and I could play basketball. We played for about 5 hours before an officer busted us. He was pretty cool about it though, even let the winning team go. Only in Indiana...
18Liliblu - if you could remember: what happened to the man who shot the teen? That just sounds so awful, after the reading this the first thing I thought of is what if someone drowns, but someone could mistakenly think someone is an intruder and take action.
"You're not to be so blind with patriotism that you can't face reality. Wrong is wrong, no matter who does it or says it." Malcolm X
19it sound so cool and fun, but well, in balance, a lot a lot of thing could go wrong
in Gossip Girl they put a scenario like this, a guy almost die because of an accident, having fun.
Accidents happen, but well you feel a lot worse if an accident happen to you in when you are doing something you shouldn't be doing it.
but well "lo bailado nadie se los quita"
20I'm sorry but this made me chuckle, kids are quite mischievous. Like my momma used to say an idol mind is the devils work shop.
21I dont even want to know what "or worse" is.
We had kids come onto the property of the summer camp i worked at, and swim in our springs, by florida law you cannot swim after dark in a natural body of water without a permit, FOR A GOOD REASON,....we heard screams and ran down there with flashlights, two naked teens on the floating dock, One big ol alligator wanting a midnight snack. I had to go get them with a canoe (still nakie) and tell them to stay away and tell thier friends too.
22holy crap thats really dumb. lucky for me, my friends throw pool parties in their own pools - complete with illegal activities.
23If only their powers could be used for good...
24Pool party - no. Field party - yes. A lot less dangerous and a lot more space!
25I would never do that! Heck, I don't even like stepping onto a neighbor's driveway when they aren't home (when I was a kid and my frisbee would go into my neighbor's yard I always felt wrong stepping on their lawn to grab it... even though my neighbors were the kindest family.)
If someone get hurt or even worse drowns, then the owner's are to blam even though they had no idea this was going on. Those teens and yound adults are morons.
26I meant "gets hurt" not get hurt.
27My spelling is rotten tonight (I'm tired.)
In my comment (#26) I meant "blame" not blam.
