Is Evoking 9/11 Always Inappropriate?

Non-profit and antismoking group, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) of New Zealand recently released this antismoking advertisement. It reads: "Terrorism related deaths since 2001 11,337. Tobacco-related deaths since 2001 30,000,000."

Besides those depressing statistics, the ad uses the provocative image of cigarettes turned Twin Towers. Are you offended by the image, or does it make you think more seriously about the grave consequence of tobacco use?

I'm with Cine_lover and Mymellowman on this one. In the most simple of terms:Sperm fertilizes egg.DNA is created. DNA is what makes a human.Human grows.Birth.I cannot understand why this is complicated.

Every second you don't spend having sex and getting pregnant you are hindering the potential human life you have between your legs. Distasteful. Respect for the dead should be excersized, no matter the cause, and comparing murder to ciggarettes is outrageous. I'm astounded that the company thought it was a good idea, and I agree that the image of 9/11 is repeatedly being cheapened.

as someone who lived in New Zealand all of last year - i can say that almost all of their ads are in poor taste! there was one on a bus shelter near my apartment that had Maori (indigenous) people on it and "endangered species" and it was something to do with smoking. I have a picture of it somewhere...

I thought it was distasteful at first, but then I really looked at it and thought about the numbers and it is really powerful, if you want to compare the holocaust to the deaths due to nicotine addiction, go for it. maybe someone will pay attention then. Believe me I am a Jew, the Holocaust was a horrific period where millions were tortured and died, yet we allow this commonly accepted substance to destroy so many people a day. Maybe that is the next step?

They care about abortion and they care about Darfur because the media tells them to, but if they really cared they would know about the millions of people who die everyday for other equally as senseless and tragic reasons." - You imply that people don't care that people are dieing from smoking, which I do not believe is the case at all, but it is not something that people are nearly as outspoken about because of the nature of the situation.People fighting against abortion fight so hard to protect the life of an innocent unborn child who is in a situation where they are not given a choice. People speak so highly about Darfur because these people who are being affected, for the most part, are stuck in a situation that they do not have much of a choice.People who are killed by terrorists are not given a choice on whether or not they want to die, but smokers have a choice to stop smoking. They have a choice that none of the other people you mentioned have. This is why people are more outspoken about these other causes of death, because others are trying to give a chance to those without it."You're saying that people who smoke deserve to die?" - I'm not saying they should die, but it is a consequence of a choice they have made. This is not comparable to someone who has been murdered."Is that what they choose?" - It is a choice they made, not a choice made for them by someone else.
