An even more "eco-friendly" friend would be vegetables. You could compost them after use. No batteries to deal with, and for crying out loud, no cranking! :)

I love the waterproof aspect. I have a waterproof one and bath times are so relaxing! So relaxing in fact that I forgot to put it away and left it on the bathside when friends came to stay! Rechargeable has me a little nervous though, my phone is always flat when I need it most and this is an even more vital piece of equipment!
