Do Tell: What Would You Save If Your House Was on Fire?

It's scary how many wildfires we seem to have in California these days. The tragedies always make me think about how awful it would be to go through a fire, and I start to ponder the hypothetical question of what I would save if my house were burning.

My mom often said that if she could only save one thing, it would be our family photos — though that's not as relevant today in the age of digital photography. Has your home ever caught fire? If so, you probably went the safe route and saved yourself before your stuff. But if your house were burning and you could only save one thing, what would it be?

my cat and purse (containing wallet, credit card, debit card, license, car keys) and contact lenses and glasses ( i'm legally blind without them so they MIGHT be a good thing to grab lol)

Oh gosh..I'd leave saving the dogs for my mom ^.^ Since I'd most likely have my most important thing on me, my phone, i wouldnt have to worry abt that. I would prob grab the iPod and my makeup traincase.

ONE thing? We don't live in an area prone to fires or anything like that, but I put together a little "save me!" pack, just in case something were to happen and we needed to leave the house immediately. It's got a couple of really important family photos, other important documents that I don't use often and aren't stored in the fireproof safebox we've got, a change of clothes, cash. Everybody else thinks I'm paranoid for keeping something like that, but I'd rather be prepared for nothing than unprepared for the worst. If I had to take one thing with me besides the pack...the laptop definitely. It's got all the documentation of things I own. And those things can be replaced.

I would make sure my husband, our yorkie and 2 cats, and our wedding pictures we with me. Precious items and people to me. :-)

My condolences Rosa. children, pets, wallet, photo albums, external hard drive (everything is on it). I'm only thinking laptop now because people have said it, but I probably wouldn't if I had a second to decide.

Hopefully everyone would have gotten out of the house, but I would put my family, pets and friends above anything else. I would save my laptop and hard drives. I'd also save my Dad's police clearances, licenses and laptop. Any jewelery that Mum has hidden away would be saved because it's irreplaceable and my first edition Matthew Reilly novels. My most prized possession is always kept on me so I don't need to worry about it.

My kitty and my "run out of a burning house" bag. My husband had taught me to prepare a bag with all our important docs and info. like passports, social security cards, some money, birth certificates and other important things like those. (this is more for people who don't have a safe deposit box)

Myself, and my disabled brother if he is home. My mom and step dads room is downstairs and even though the fire department told me that if there is a fire I should just leave him in his room, its not like I could ever ever ever do that. I mean really. Hes older than me but he has severe autism and some mental retardation- I doubt he would understand that I a fire is dangerous......And I know that there is NO way I could leave him. NO WAY. Other than that, Im just throwing on some pants and getting myself the eff out. I have all my pics on photobucket, even old ones, and all my important docs are in a fire proof safe etc I send myself all my drafts to my email. So if there is a fire , Im getting people out and thats it Rosa- I am so so sorry for your loss. My condolences. Ive always been really worried about this, one of my moms best friends lost her first born son in a house fire and it scared me half to death, I have always been hyper vigallent about planning escape routes etc

Wow this is a tough question. The first thing I thought of was my laptop, which has all my personal photos on it, but not any of my old family photos. Those are packed away in two big heavy boxes with some other old ancient albums (some belonging to my grandmother when she was a teen) scattered around the house. I should probably put them in fireproof boxes or something because I doubt I'd be able to haul them out if a fire was blazing. So yeah, definitely my laptop.

Rosa, I am so sorry for your loss. I wouldn't try to save any material things - it's not worth the risk. I would feel so fortunate for my husband and pets to get out safely.

My two little boy cats would be my number one priority... I'd try to grab my old laptop, as I haven't moved pictures over to the new one yet - I'd get both if I could, but the old one is more important to me. Oh, and my digital camera, because I have a lot of pictures I haven't transferred yet. I could probably lose everything but my two cats, though, and I'd be devastated, but OK.

our two external hard disks (backups), lock the fireproof safe, grab my handbag and leave. Everything can be replaced relatively easily except my passports (dual nationality, birth certificates, parents marriage certificates etc.. they all involve a £2000 trip home to replace), and car warrantys and log books etc which are kept in the safe anyway. Everything else is what insurance is for.

my aminals, my photo albums and laptop for all the pictures. it would be a shame if my 100 yr old library burnt down. some of these books have gone through 2 world wars, one war of independence and it would be a shame to lose that history.

My back up drive with all of my family's pics on it (including my dad's =(...) and of course all of my loved ones (pets included). Oh, and my vintage louie!
