Do Tell: How Do You Make New Friends?

As we get older, some of us become pickier about our friendships. If we have less in common with an old friend, or come to find we have different lifestyles, we may let the friendship go.

Even if we still keep in touch with our longtime friends, we might live in different cities than they do. So as older friendships become distance, how do we make new pals to replace the old ones? As I get older, I've made new friends at work, through other friends, by joining an adult sport team, or thanks to a guy I might be dating. Since meeting a new friend can be as challenging as meeting a new love interest (and perhaps more!) I'm asking you all to share your secrets: how do you make new friends?

I was really worried about being able to make friends in college (I only had one friend there and weren't close), so I took the initiative. I had met a few people at orientation so I called and invited them to watch a movie. I asked my roommate (who is now my best friend in college) to join us. From there I was just nice and friendly to people that I met and unless a person gave me really bad vibes I didn't turn down offers to grab lunch or hang out.

I need new friends as well. Its not like when you are 5 and you can just ask somebody "Hi. do you want to me my friend!?" and from that day forward you are inseperable.. boy i miss those days.

this post is such a relief. I have tons of friends, but feel like I have very few close friends. I know it sounds silly, but one thing that scares me is if I get married and have to pick out a bridal party, I feel like I'm not close enough to any girls right now to have choices that make sense.

I agree with so many other women on here. I'm 22, but everyone i meet drinks all the time or are only focus on meeting new boys, ALWAYS lol. It get annoying. Isn't there anyone who can hold a conversation without alcohol? I work with people who are all at least 20+ years older than me, i joined a couple of volleyball leagues by myself and got placed on a team with people about 20+years older than me. I can't find people in my age group who i can get along with. I live in Colorado Springs and there is such lack of culture here. I mean it's a very diverse city with all of the military, but no culture. It lacks cultural food, people, knowledge. Denver is the closest i can get, but i moved here from southern California which is way different. Is there anyone in this area who is entertaining? The Midwest sucks! lol Why are all you sugar girls so far away lol.

you are lucky ladies, at least you live in the same continent.. i live in Turkey and when i try to talk to people around, even online, i feel like i am hitting on them..but all this inspired me for a 2010 goal.. "try making new girlfriends" I am going out for a dinner with a girl tonight. she works in a company who supplies goods to the firm that i work.. cool,right? i acted like this is business at all, i hope we have something in common.

add me to the list! i went to college out of state and moved back home after graduating. i have a ton of close friends from school, but now we're 4 hours apart. there's only one friend from high school who i keep in touch with and is still in town, my social life is pretty dead. making friends was so much easier in school.

jadenirvana - i live in the seattle area!! i moved here from chicago 4 years ago and have yet to meet any good friends. i've read about the "seattle freeze" and i guess i'm witnessing it in full effect. i work in a really small company with all men, and one other female who i really tried to be friends with but i just don't have much in common with her. sometimes i wish i was back in college where it was soooo easy to meet fun people.

I think it's really hard to meet new friends in your late twenties too! Tres, maybe you girls can start Sugar Mixers in cities for people like us. I always think the people that read this site must be cool:)
