Do Tell: How Do You Feel About Eating Alone?

Whenever I see people eating dinner alone at a restaurant, without the distractions of a computer or television, I have to say I get a little sad for them. I know they could be eating by themselves because they want to, but they just look so lonely! I've always considered going out to dinner to be more of a fun, social event rather than just a way to satisfy your hunger but ladies, do tell, how do you feel about eating alone?

I enjoy it! I get alone time to reflect. I also get to enjoy being served and waited on. Movies can be enjoyable alone as well. I do wonder what it's like to vacation alone.

I eat out with others 97% of the time, but sometimes after work if I can't be bothered cooking but still want a decent meal I'll go solo to the restaurant in the mall I work in. It can be awkward but it isn't too bad.

I can't stand to eat alone. I will starve before I eat inside a restaurant alone. If I have a book or my laptop its a little different but just going to dine in by myself freaks me out.

i've only done it while on business trips-- that is, not by choice. it takes a while to get used to.

love it! a meal that i didn't cook, i don't have to clean up, i don't have to entertain anyone while i eat, don't have to share anything off my plate, can order it EXACTLY as i like it and take as long as i want. heaven! maybe it's a mommy thing, lol

My friends told me that eating out alone was awesome so I tried it one time and I will NEVER do that again, it was the most awkward thing that I've ever done!

When I lived in another state, I use to treat myself to lunch on payday weeks. At first, I felt awkward eating alone, but then after awhile, I enjoyed the ritual. Now that I am married, I rarely eat alone... sometimes it is nice to just get out of the house and be alone, but now I ten to do it with a magazine and a book in a Barnes and Nobles cafe.

"without the distractions of a computer or television, I have to say I get a little sad for them" This is gonna sound way harsher than I mean it so apologies in advance, but I feel sad for the person who thinks that, and doesn't know how to appreciate reading a book while having a meal, for instance. Sometimes you don't need distraction, it's a great thing to be able to be happy with yourself, have enough of your thoughts to keep you busy, or just know how to enjoy a good meal and go out just for it. I love seeing people, but I also love sometimes going for walks on my own, skipping a party to read a book in my room, ordering a pizza, or just sitting there to *think*. I call that appreciating quiet and free time. :)

Isn't enjoying good food the best part about eating out? And isn't being able to spontaneously go out and eat whatever you want without asking someone's permission one of the great things about being an adult? I pity those of you who can't do anything unless someone goes with you. It must be so stifling to be so concerned about what other people think about your social status. It's like high school all over again. Oh noes! No one is sitting at my lunch table! The popular kids are going to think I'm a loser! OMGBBQ!!11!!! Although I guess I can't blame those of you stuck in this mindset. Society does do its damnest to train everyone to groupthink from an early age. Note the usage of terms such as "sad" and "weird" to describe an activity that deviates from groupthink, like *gasp* eating alone.

I actually try to eat out alone as much as I can! To me it's about independence and well, me time, where, like others have mentioned, I don't have to worry about making conversation, I can just sit back and observe. Most of the times though, it's a spur of the moment thingie, and I only brought a magazine once! Mostly, I just watch people. I try to avoid packed restaurant though because the stares make me feel quite self-conscious. I love going to the movies alone too! But again, only when it's not too crowded!

I love eating out alone. I love going to the movies alone. It's so stress free and quiet. After working and being around people all day, it's a nice opportunity to tune out.

I don't have a problem eating alone and I have never noticed "pity stares". I have never left my house to go to a restaurant by myself, but if I am already out shopping or doing errands, I don't have a problem eating at a nice restaurant by myself.
