Do Tell: Is It Bad Luck to Try on Someone's Ring?

It's been said that trying someone's engagement ring on your left ring finger is bad luck for single women. Why? I'm not sure, but even though I know it's just an old wives tale, it's one superstition that I don't want to test! Since I love to try on engagement rings, I always slip them on my right hand, just in case. But what about you? Ladies, do tell, when you try on your a friend's engagement ring, do you put it on your right or left hand?

I've never heard about this, and I don't really believe it. But when I look at my friends' rings, I just hold it, I don't put it on. I think that's kind of weird, but everyone has their opinion.

I don't believe in luck, and I'm not superstitious at *all*. Pretty silly, imo.

I had never heard this before until my brother got married and I tried on my SIL's ring and he flipped out. I wonder if its more prevalent in certain regions of the country. For the record, they are happily married. I wouldn't care if some one tried mine on. The freak out about it would make it more of a big deal than anything.

I HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY ANY WOMAN WOULD WANT TO TRY ON HER FRIENDS ENGAGEMENT RING...BAD LUCK I DON'T KNOW...BAD TASTE..YES!

In Ireland trying on the engagement ring is a tradition. It's seen as good luck not bad. When trying on the ring women put it on their left ring finger twist it towards their heart three times and make a wish. When I got engaged every woman in my office tried it on! It didn't bother me after the first 10times :)

While, I don't really believe in luck, I still cant ignore silly superstitions. I was always taught that you can try on someone's ring, that it cant go straight from their fingers to yours. First, you must let it rest on a table and then you can try it on. I am sure its just a waste of time, but I still do it whenever I try on someone's ring and if my friend has a big one -why not try it on for fun!

No one would want to try on mine b/c it's not that nice. I would never ask to try on someone else's just b/c that might offend them. BUT a female co-worker took her ring off and gave it to me to try on (unsolicited) and I didn't think it was bad luck (obviously not since I got married less than a year later). As far as why anyone would want to -- it's neat seeing a big honking diamong on your finger!!! Some of us aren't going to get that so we can live vicariously for a second :)

I've let people try on mine before, but i would never ask to try on someone else's....i will try it on, however if they offer, but most of my friends have smaller fingers than me!

My fiance had me try on one of our close friends' wedding ring so the little sneak could get my ring size for MY engagement ring : ) In my case, it was definitely a good-luck situation!

I've always been told it's bad luck and instead of risking it, I would always put the ring on my right hand when trying them on.

I've never done it before, not because of superstition, but just because it seems presumptuous to ask or just plain weird! I wouldn't let anyone try on my ring either.

I never try on another woman's ring. It doesn't feel right to me. However, I let other people, like friends and family, try on my ring, especially if they ask. I've even let little girls try on my ring. I've gotten some of sweetest, genuine reactions of awe from little girls. My husband teased that I "training" them. LOL

I might have heard of this old wives tale. However, I don't think it's bad luck, just tacky. I mean, if a friend wants you to try on their ring, that's fine, but if you go around asking to try on people's rings, that's...sort of sad. I would be possessive about my engagement ring, too. Plus, if I had a ring, it would probably get stuck on most people's fingers, and that's even worse. My mom gave her engagement ring to her sister, so...I dunno, I guess some people just don't care.

I agree, Kimpossible. It's too personal! For me, it would be like asking to borrow a friend's (clean) underwear. Some girls would be okay with that, probably, but not me! If someone asked to try on my engagement ring, I would give them a weird look and decline. Also, never heard of the superstition, but now it will bug me if I see someone do this!

I wouldn't try on a friends engagement ring. It's such a personal sentiment of love, I just couldn't imagine putting someone elses engagement ring on my finger.

I'm not engaged so I don't know from experience, but I don't think I'd let somebody else put it on their finger anyway. I also don't have any friends that would be interested in that, especially since they're mostly hetero men who wouldn't know a diamond from rock salt.

Ha, I didn't see my mother for a couple months after I was engaged so when I first saw her, she just wanted to see the ring. She took it off my finger to see it more closely, and then next thing I know she had taken off her wedding ring and slipped on my engagement ring... and it got stuck! It took about an hour of icing her finger and lots of soap to get that sucker off her finger... talk about bad luck, haha. But no it doesn't bother me in the least and as long as it was someone I was very close with, I'd let them try on my ring. In fact, when I was at the aquarium last I got to pet the dolphins and I had to remove all jewelery, so my best friend wore my ring for a bit. Doesn't bother me at all.

I've never tried on someone else's engagement ring. I don't know if it's bad luck. I just think it's a bit strange. My engagement ring was the first ring to ever touch my left ring finger.
