Dear Poll: Would You Write Your Own Vows?

It’s getting more and more commonplace for people to opt out of the traditional wedding and come up with something completely their own. Some of the more obvious changes are location, colors, and the use of themes but there are also subtle differences that can make a wedding seem more special, such as writing your own vows. I'm more traditional, but I think the idea of writing your own vows is a really nice way to share your love for one another and make your wedding day unique. So ladies, would you consider writing your own vows?

I don't think we're allowed to b/c we're getting married in a Catholic Church but i have no desire to. Even though I'm a writer its' just way too much pressure, and not my fiance's and my style. They would turn out sarcastic and funny, not so much romantic.

I may or may not write my vows. As long as the words "to obey" are omitted from my wedding, I'm all good. In having those words omitted, it will be following tradition. My mom stopped the minister in the middle of her vows and made him start over with out "obey."

We wanted to, but we're Catholic and aren't allowed to. At least according to our past so we had to stick to the traditional

honestly i usually cringe when i go to the weddings where to bride and groom have written their own vows. one time it was womderful, the man (who i had known since we were babys) wote something like "my love share my life with me" and then listed what he imagined their lives together with things like their children have the same turn of her head when she laughs, very sweet and moving.we went traditional. dh is a electrical engineer, not the romantic, prose writing type, lol.

I wrote the entire wedding ceremony script for the officiant to read. Being a writer, I enjoyed actually being able to articulate for our friends and family what the day means/meant for us and how immportant each and everyone there was as they made us the persons who stood before them ready to embrace love and the journey of marriage. I encourage anyone who wants to make their wedding ceremony more personal to talk to their officiant about crafting their own words for the special event.

sass317, I'll definitely be the same way! I'm a very emotional person and I know that my wedding will just send me over the top. lol I don't think I'll be able to get through the regular vows much less try to come up with something. Every time I'd sit down to write them I'd probably wind up crying my eyes out :cry:

My husband asked me if I wanted to write our own vows and I would have liked to except for the fact I wouldnt have been able to get through them to save my life. I was so emotional saying the regular vows- I couldnt have said out loud what I would have liked, however our minister was cool and had all kinds of different kinds of vows for us to choose from so we could pick the ones that suit us the best.

My husband and I wrote our own vows. I only wrote down what I was committed to being for him as his wife. He wrote the same. I think it's sweet and much more meaningful to hear from your spouses own words, the commitment they personally pledge to you.

I like the tradition. Saying vows that people have been saying for centuries is very romantic. Also, I hate when people write their own vows and they are dim-witted or cheesy. Like Brad Pitt's and Jennifer Aniston's "I promise to always make your favorite banana milkshake." Yeahhhh that vow lasted a long time.

I'm lazy, so I don't feel it necessary. I mean, my fiance would already know exactly how I feel about him. Why put on a big show for the rest of our guests by being overly cheesy? My boyfriend and I are really open about our feelings for one another. It would seem redundant to say the same things over at the wedding.
