Dear Poll: Would You Use a Nanny Cam?

I am not a mother, but I do know how hard it is for new moms to leave their children for the first time. Trusting someone to watch your kids while you enjoy a much needed night off, or while you have to attend your husband's work function takes a lot of faith, and most of all, intuition.

So after you've interviewed many potential babysitter candidates, do you truly feel they can be trusted with your baby, or would you feel more comfortable if you could see everything that's going on while you're out? We have all heard of Nanny Cams, so to all you mothers out there, would you, or do you use a nanny cam when you leave your child with a sitter?

no kids for me, but i can't imagine using a nanny cam.

ok but if you tell them about the camera couldn't they just do things in other rooms where they knew the camera couldn't see... it defeats the purpose

I am not sure if I would use one, but I stay home with my daughter. She has only been watched by family members and friends and only once by a babysitter in almost 8 years. Both of my sister in laws have nannies but I don't think they have nanny cams. However, they are both SAHM's and are there most of the time except for when they go do errands.

hell yes!! my mom is a nanny and has worked with 2 other nannies in the same home...i personally would see what the baby nurse would do to the baby she was taking care of treating him like a rag doll at he was like 2 or 3 months old! really? the parents never saw this because of course her behavior was different in front of them..i tell you nanny cam all the way.. ideally i would like to take care of my kids myself or have even my mom take care of them...but if i ever had to hire a nanny you bet a nanny cam would be in place..even if her background was "clean"

i dont have kids.. but when i do.. i plan on staying home with them till they are in junior high school.. so by then.. they should be able to stay home alone.. for the hour or so from after school to when i get off work.. cuz really i dont think i could trust anyone with my kids.. unless it was close family

I completely agree with starbright. If you're going to use it, have it be something you state up-front. Nannies should know that if they don't want to be seen picking their nose or scratching their ass, they can step into the bathroom. And hopefully no one's setting up nanny cams in the bathroom.

I have been a nanny on and off for the past ten years... and I have to say, I have always felt extremely violated when I found out that the family was watching me. I understand the need to protect your children, but I don't know where it becomes crossing the line. I suggest that if you are putting up a camera to watch the nanny, I would let her know it's running...

as a nanny, i feel like nanny cams are an invasion of privacy. I just feel strange being watched, even though Im not doing anything wrong. A lot of times i look in the pantry for food too and i would just feel strange

Plus a lot of times someone hurting a child ends up being someone that the parents trusted. A camera would just show me how much the parents were willing to do to ensure their children's safety.

I've also been a nanny but if I found a camera I would understand and respect it. I love the children I nannied for and want the best for them and never had anything to hide. I think that if all nannies were recorded or acted as if they were being recorded then we'd all be better off starting with the kids. When I nannied and would take the children to the park, most of the other nannies would just sit and talk with each other instead of playing with and supervising the children they were responsible for. Maybe nanny cams would improve the quality of care that some kids are receiving.

If I had a Nanny I would only use it for the first couple of weeks to make sure that I could trust her and monitor how she was with my kid.

idk I used to babysit, and in this world where you never ever absolutly can know a person won't harm your child... I wouldn't blame parents if they wanted to tape me... as long as it wasn't just me... if it was the same treatment for anyone who watched their kids thats fine.

Being a nanny also, It would be wierd if I found a nanny cam. And I would be hurt. But I suppose some parents just need the extra reassurance that their children are ok.I think nanny cams are trully neccessary when the parents thing something is wrong, but that's why you have to have pick someone you trust with your kids.

remedios: I agree with you from a nanny's perspective. I would be very surprised if anyone I ever worked for had one of these cameras, but they would not have seen anything anyway! LOL. Nevertheless there is a fine line here... is the nanny's privacy as a worker important when she's in charge of someone's children? This is some ethical debate I don't even know how to begin.
