Dear Poll: Do you Believe in Scheduled C-Sections?

Something's in the water in Hollywood. Celebrity mothers-to-be are about ready to pop left and right, yet they haven't let their pregnancies stop them from exercising or spending the afternoon with girlfriends. While some mothers wait for their water to break, others opt for the more convenient yet highly controversial route, a scheduled c-section. It's been reported that Bridget Moynahan scheduled hers, and while I have my own point of view on this topic, what I want to know is, do you think scheduling a c-section is a good idea or a bad idea?

Really I think it's the Mother's choice to have a section or not to have one!None of you people are going to be in holding her hand while the operation is going down so your thoughts are really null and void.I also think it's pretty condescending to assume they aren't thinking about the child THEY have conceived and carried for 9 months.I myself wanted a natural birth and after 19 hours of hard labor had to have a section and now am having another child in 20 days and am having a planned section for many personal reasons.Also those of you with 0 children can say all day what you think you would do but none of you have ever been through having a baby either way and have no idea how your situation would turn out or what giving birth either way entails.really don't be so judgemental about something you know nothing about!!!!!!!Either way vaginal or section the mother is giving plenty of herself and going through plenty of pain to bring that child into this world.

oh, i agree with you on that, I voted i woudln't but it should be up to everyone to make up their own minds. I just like reminding people that although there are facts and statistics, stratistcs can be used however a person wants, spun, what have you...so you can never take that sort of thing at face value.

cravinsugar, I'm not saying c-sections are better, I'm saying that they're not demonized in the medical community like posters in this thread believe.

noel- 1 out of 5 female gynecologists choose elective c-section for themselves when they give birth, so clearly all OB/GYNs don't recommend vaginal births if possible. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists finds it to be completely ethical to perform elective c-sections. And nobody who had a planned c-section is placed under anesthesia- they use an epidural just like many people here have for their births.

The risks involved with c-sections are huge. I've had two friends recently give birth, one each way. The natural mother did her research well, and found out that the death rate among babies born via c-section is much higher than those born naturally (because of complications of not knowing the exact date of conception, even regular mom's with scheduled can deliver pre-maturily on accident). They wanted her to have a c-section because her labor was extending for more than 24 hours. This gave her an additional boost, and she was able to deliver naturally. My other friend had a c-section. It wasn't scheduled, but she was ok with it. Because of the c-section, she was in an incredible amount of pain, and the antibiotics they put her on after the surgury caused her breastmilk to dry up. Research has been done showing the importance of breastfeeding babies, and it's not uncommon to not be able to breastfeed after having a c-section. I'm all for a c-section if it's *medically necessary* but only then. Give birth the way our bodies were intended to! We've been doing it for how many thousands of years now? Considering what our ancestors went through, we have it pretty well off.

i am ignorant on this subject, but i do thnink it's a pesonal decision and theres is no good or bad-it depends on the person and the circumstances.

Noel...My best friend is married to an OB/GYN and they planned a c-section b/c she didn't want to feel pain and he said it was easier and not a problem at all.I personally was shocked by her decision b/c she has wanted kids for as long as I've known her(20+ yrs). I never thought that she would have done that for fear of pain.I don't have a problem with it if it is medically necessary, but I do if it is for vanity or fear of pain. BTW...I did natural childbirth. I asked for an epi, but never got it.

the reason celebrity c-sections are so popular is because of an incredible little procedure known as the c-section tummy tuck. You have to book in advance, because it's hard to find surgeons that can do it on short notice, and if you don't do it during the actual c-section, there's a lot more surgery and healing time required. I personally have no problem with it. I know people who've had their babies that way, and they turned out fine. There are pros and cons with both natural birth and c-sections, but it's really no one's business other than the mother and doctor.

are you kidding me, people? i'd rather risk a little NATURAL tearing (which actually heals easier than an episiotomy) than a huge, unnatural CUT IN MY ABDOMEN. i've heard people say that it feels like your insides are going to fall out! i even heard of a story on the news of a woman whose insides DID fall out when she stood up because of bad stitching.

I've given birth three times, and was lucky enough to deliver all three children (including the middle one, who weighed 10 pounds) vaginally. However, the first and third were extremely late, so my doctor and I picked an induction date and said if the baby didn't come by that day, we would induce her. Both wound up being induced--the first was 8 pounds, 14 ounces, and the third was 9 pounds, 8 ounces. My sister-in-law needed a Cesarean because of back problems and her doctor scheduled her because he said it was easier to have a set number of Cesareans per day in his schedule. She was very relieved to pick a date and work things out with childcare for her older child; however, the baby had other plans and she went into labor a week ahead of her scheduled Cesarean! She went to the hospital and they delivered her daughter by unscheduled Cesarean. Just goes to show that when it comes to childbirth, sometimes all the careful planning the world doesn't matter if your body and the baby have other ideas!

A ceserean section is definately NOT less damaging to the body..it is a major surgery that takes weeks of recovery. If you actually talk to an OB GYN, they will all say they recommend vaginal births if at all possible because it is less taxing on the body. I have seen many c sections done, and it is not a gentle process...the doctors make an incision, pull apart the skin (i was shocked by how forcefully they did this), cut the uterus to deliver the baby, and they bring the uterus out of the body to sew it back up. There are much higher risks of infection and hemorrhage in cesereans, including the risks of being under anesthesia. Most OBs will not allow a woman to schedule a ceserean unless they deem it medically necessary (ie previous c section, prior uterine surgery, etc...).

I've never given birth, but my personal understanding of it is that a C-section is both less damaging to the body and less stressful for everyone. I don't see any problem with it. However, there are people talking now about how it is possible that the baby's brain is massaged or something in the birth canal and it's good for the baby, I can't speak to the truth or fiction of that though. It's just a personal choice, but sadly, like breast/bottle feeding some mothers get so obsessed with their choice, it becomes an argument with people who make different choices.

I don't think the question is aimed specifically AT Bridget, but the story that she was planning it brought up the thought. Many other 'stars' and 'civilians' are doing this lately and it's become a fad. Unless medically necessary, a C-Section is not a good idea. I don't think pain and selfishness should factor in here - there are more risks associated with a C-Section than vaginal. There are times yes, when it is a medical necessity and needs to be done. For the most part though, a planned C-Section is not necessary and shouldn't be an option. Childbirth is one of the most dangerous things a woman can go through, but our bodies were designed to perform this miracle of physics (because seriously - passing something the size of a watermelon out of a space the size of a lemon?!). Why make this any more risky by going through a surgery. If you are an actress and have to get right back to work and care about making your millions and looking great and passing your kids to a nanny 18 hours a day - why are you having kids in the first place?

How unfair is this poll? You don't know Bridget's medical history, or problems that she might have in delivering this child. If her doctor advised a C section, why not schedule it. Besides, the C section crap was started by the Boston Herald from Tom Brady's camp to make him look like a good guy. Like the crap about his being in touch with Bridget and helping to name the baby and wanting to bond with the kid before he starts Patriots training. Give this girl a break. She did the honorable thing, not Mr. Brady and certainly not your gal, Pop Sugar, Gisele. I am appalled at this question.

t0x, I know that doctors won't let you labor past a certain point- I was referring to a specific commenter saying that she was in labor for 54 hours without a doctor but then had the gall to call women who choose c-sections selfish. I don't think avoiding stretch marks or additional weight gain is a good reason for a c-section, but I do think that for some women who are really tiny a planned c-section might be a way to go if they are not hung up on the vaginal delivery process. I don't think a natural drug-free birth is possible for everybody and I don't think having a c-section (planned or not) or using epidurals or pain relief makes one less of a mother. I think the real business of mothering begins after the baby is born and the goal of labor and delivery should be to produce a healthy baby, and also a mother who is happy with the process and outcome.

Fac, a dr wont let you go more then a certian amount of hours in labor they will csect. And alot of csections wait till you are in labor or over due or around your due date. Having a csect before your due date like some stars supposedly do bc they dont want stretch marks or the weight is stupid. To each there own. I had epi's with both boys. I took the pain as long as I could but Im not about to be in more pain then I need to. Theres no hangover from the epi so Im feeling the same as any other mom I think.
