Dear Poll: Do You Prefer Working With Men or Women?

In this day and age, office buildings are full of both male and female employees. While it's great to see so many hard working women in the work place, it's easy to get a reputation of being a b*tch vs. a hard working, powerful businesswoman.

Sherri Shepard from The View, who works with four other women was quoted in Entertainment Weekly saying, "I used to think women couldn't work together. Because some b*tches will work your nerves." Sure, women can have their off days, but let's face it, so can men. Since I've mainly worked with women throughout my career, let me ask you this — do you prefer working mainly with men or women?

I work for a webhosting company (I found out recently that we host this site! How cool is that?) and my department is mostly guys (out of 30 people, 3 women) and I've found that there's just as much drama with the guys...lots of egos and pissing contests to be had. But they're nice to me, probably because I'm a woman. I work on the same shift as one of the other women and I don't think she likes me because I'm not girly enough. I try to be nice to her, help her when there's a server that's too heavy for her to pick up or fixing an issue she can't figure out, but I've caught her talking shit about me anyway. I don't know, I'm not the type of person to let that bother me, but it has made me wary of seeing more women in my department in the future.

I work in an office that is predominantly female. There are five girls in the front, their female manager has her desk in the middle room and I'm in the back room with two others, the only males in the office. While I get along with all of my coworkers, I definitely love being away from all of the drama that takes place in the front. The guys and I joke around, we don't get upset with each other and we have fun. Most of the time one of the girls from the front comes to the back to complain about the others. So I definitely think it's better working with guys from my experience.

In my profession (I'm a microbiologist), it's super critical to be very detail oriented and be able to multitask like crazy to get everything done. Almost all my coworkers are women and it's probably a good thing. The one guy that does work with us is usually very "single minded" and can't do more than one thing at a time, which frustrates the rest of us. I think it really depends on what profession you're in, though. When I worked in sales, I worked with a lot of men and they were cool to work with in that particular environment.

Females are catty and think part of their job is nosing into your personal life. I think personal and business life should be completely seperate. I don't want my co-workers asking me about my life outside of work, or expecting me to join them for Happy Hour drinks or manicures.

I once worked in an office full of men (well, 95%) and really did not like it. I hated the nonstop talk about sports, fantasy football or baseball, stock market or talk about girls and body parts. While it was all in good humor, getting hit in the head while the boys are throwing around a nurf ball in the office just wasn't cool. With that said however, I think it's more about the connection of the people. Ideally, it would be great to work with a good mix of both genders.

This is stupid. It's not like there's one "man" and one "woman" that everyone in that gender acts like. This is just a question that reinforces our thinking in stereotypical modes. I've worked in restaurants, bookstores, and various capacities in the computer industry. The personalities varied in all of those. Even speaking in generalizations, men in restaurants are different than men in bookstores are different than men in the computer world. Same with women. Can we stop feeding into this crap and join the 21st century?

I hope to not offend ANYONE: I work in the fashion industry, and 98% of the men i work with a GAY. Now, I generally LOVE the gays. But in fashion everything is hectic, and i'm always on crazy (sometimes unrealistic) schedules. Gay men tend to be very anal and b*tchy. hmmm . . . now, the women in my industry are very competitive, but you always can relate to them better; like talking about the fit of American Apparel's leggings, vs. Topshop's and which pair of designer shoes we found on sale at Neiman's. The gay men are nice (when they aren't on their power-trips), but it's sometimes more annoying taking crap from a man who plucks his eye brows more than you do (Johnathan, if you happen to be reading this, YOU KNOW I LUV YOU!). His eyebrows should be in a museum!

I think it's more about the personality than the gender. I can pretty much get along with anyone so I don't have a preference. I don't work, though.

I like to work, preferably in the company of women or "creative -minded" men (or gay men) because my work and interests involves a lot of creativity. Plus, I tend to be more competitive with women in a good way and I'm more cooperative and sympathetic with women. Although men are easy to get along with in any work environment, I feel more creative with women.

Out of the bosses I've had, I prefer men (although I've had a very catty male boss who bashed on my clothes!!!), but for coworkers, it all depends. I loved my all female office because there wasn't a catty element there and things ran as it should. But some other places the girls brought the drama. Plus I'm one of the guys in my social life as well, so I like having coworkers to talk about the games with, and that's usually the guys.

i work in computers, so its always been mostly men. i don't know what it would be like to work with women, i'd like to have the opportunity some time, just to see the difference.

Have to be honest I adore workign with men. They are fun and a lot more laid back normally. I have worked with a few really cool women but most of the time in my experience it's the women who make the environment more tense and gossipy.

Two jobs ago, I was the only woman in a department of all men, and it was AWESOME. The funny thing was, though, the VP of the company was female and always came to check on me to see if I was okay being the only girl. :rotfl: The job I had after that was all women and it was AWFUL. Some of those girls were so catty and mean. Now my job is pretty much an even mix between men and women. Luckily, none of the women are catty this time and it's a nice place to work.

I've worked with both and my preference is when the men outnumber the women. I hate to bash my own gender, but women can be such pains in the office because they can bring so much emotion with things that are strictly business.

i think men are just easier to get along with in general. i used to hang out with a bunch of guys, and now i live with them plus one of their gfs. i have never ever had a problem with any of them, but she makes living together very uncomfortable.

I have never thought about it before- but now that I read this I think men. All the people that drive me nuts at my job are ALL women...I am noticing a trend here! haha

In the past, I've always preferred working with men... but in my current lab, the majority of post-docs and Ph.D. students are female, and I adore them all. I think it helps that we are all so independent and working on our own projects, so we don't have to work together frequently, and we're all scientists so we're very laid back. I LOVE having coworkers that I consider to be close friends too -- it makes going in to the lab that much more enjoyable, when I know that I'm not just going to do experiments, but also to spend time with friends.

I think it depends on the industry your in. I have been in fashion/sportswear and there really is no difference; everyone seems to be catty and gossipy.
