Dear Poll: Do You Ever Lie About Your Relationship Status?

I have definitely warded off an approaching jerk by mentioning a fictional boyfriend. But that’s about the only time I’ll blatantly lie about my relationship status. One of my friends always lies to her grandparents and tells them she’s dating when she’s not to avoid their constant pressure. And of course, there are many people, unfortunately, who gladly lie about being in a relationship in order to appear single. So tell me ladies, do you ever lie about your relationship status?

When I was 12 I had a made up boyfriend lol. It was too funny. Now I've never had to lie about it because I was in a serious relationship starting at 18 and I ended up marrying him.

i have lied to try to get skanky guys away from me. sadly, even when i was *in* a relationship and not lying but telling them thats why i didn't wanna talk to them..they would say 'your man don't have to know' UGH that would send me bonkers

I don't tell my family when I have a bf. My mother is utterly overbearing and wants to talk about it and is practically making wedding plans every time I mention a boy's name. (She thinks I'm still in love with my high school ex-bf. We broke up 4 years ago. And are relatively civil to each other. But really, wtf? Can I not have non-sexual relationships with men?)

I've only had to the use "I've got a boyfriend" line when I didn't a few times. Though once this creepy guy was hitting on me at a party, my friends were not be found, and I tried to get away by saying I had a boyfriend. Instead of him leaving he wanted to know about him. I told him factual details about a guy, who was just a friend, that moved back home (out of state). He seemed even more interested and without a hesitation he goes oh I visit there all the time ... tell him I said hi. And still didn't leave me alone! I had to sneakily disappear! And I've got a diamond right hand ring, there's been a few times I've thought about changing hands and seeing if that'd stop some guys, but every time I seriously think about doing that no one hits on me! Haha

Is it lying if the topic never comes up or you just don't even mention it? I can be pretty clueless sometimes on whether or not a guy is just talking to me or if he is trying to hit on me.

its usually a fail safe but some guys question why you're alone or down right dont care which just turns you off even more... i mena if he can't respect that you're in a relationship it gives you an insight into how he'll be in one, right?

I'm lucky. I've got some really good guy friends who play boyfriend when my guy isn't around, and it usually works.

I've used the "I've already got a boyfriend" excuse, definitely. Unfortunately, sometimes it does not work. Sometimes guys love a challenge!

I just use "I have a boyfriend" to get away fro guys I don't like. It worked all the time for me.

I worked at a jewelry store a year ago and traded up an old promise ring for a little diamond wedding band to wear on my wedding finger. I call it simply, "my ring" since I used a failed relationship to buy a nice piece for myself. So now its my wedding finger "staple" It has now not only become a conversation piece but a GREAT way to ward off guys. Only thing is, when a guy is interested I have to explain to him what it really is. And it REALLY does work! I also joke that its only a quarter carat... and I better be gettin more than that!

I wish there was an all-girls club where I can just have fun and dance and not feel guilty when guys try to grind me! that always leads to complicated explanations to my bf :/

Sometimes, when I say I have a boyfriend it doesn't stop sleazy guys. So, I wear a ring on my ring finger and say I have a fiance. That usually works.

i stopped claiming i have boyfriend because it doesn't work anymore. Guys now go "Oh yeah, what's his name? What does he look like? I don't believe you, you're just trying to get rid of me" and I'm like DUH genius, so wft are you still doing here?

Also, the "I'm a lesbian" line almost never works. I have several lesbian friends and most guys just don't believe it or start asking invasive questions.

I'm with Le Luxe. I'm a friendly and flirty drunk, so when I'm out at a club I wear a CZ ring. I was dancing with a guy once and he looked down at my hand horrified and was like "you're engaged?!" and took off. Sorry you can't get me drunk and take me home ;) I like to go out and dance and not have skeevy guys trying to put they're hands on me and the ring is like kryptonite!

i was at a bar one time and i was trying to lose a guy hitting on my and i was like my bf is getting me a drink and the guy was like yea right! and he just ignored it and was like come to our vip section. i was like no seriously. and he's like yea yea.. and then my bf came back from buying me a drink (long line!) and the dude booked it lol

I have this guy I'm working things out with right now (he lives in England, and I live in the States). I was visiting my aunt, and she kept telling everyone that he was my boyfriend. Considering that I'm not quite sure what we are right now, and not really knowing how to explain it, nor really wanting to, I just let her tell people that.

i don't. you just have to be staight with the losers; I'm NOT interested! i never lied to family about a boyfriend. i have lied by ommission; not telling them about a guy so that i am not asked to bring him to the family reunion. but THAT lie didn't work because Dan (my BF) was sitting there while i was on the phone with my Aunt, and he was all pissed because he wanted to go and meet EVERYONE.

Absolutely looseseal. I think guys don't believe us anymore. In fact, I've been told flat out that they don't believe me. It's a little frustrating. So I've found just being straight and telling them that I'm not interested works better actually.

I have had random guys come oup to me on the street or (scary) stop their cars on the side of the road when they see me walking. I have said I was in a relationship even if I wasn't in those times, but I wouldn't lie to avoid pressure, and certainly not to appear single when I am not.

I've used the "I have a boyfriend" on annoying guys I want rid of, too. But maybe with so many single gals like me lying about having a boyfriend, the persistent jerkwads have caught on. So now they're not taking "I have a boyfriend" seriously, even for the ones who really do have boyfriends. That, or in these jackasses tiny little minds, it doesn't matter if someone is coupled.

Some guys just don't understand the meaning of, "Sorry, NOT INTERESTED." Telling them you have a boyfriend gets rid of em quick. Telling them you have a lesbian just turns them on - some morons seem to think lesbian = 3-ways. LOL at michelle_c re: the Mormon tactic!!

I travel by myself a lot for work and I have recently been considering getting a cheap CZ ring to wear just for this very reason.
