Day 1: Here's What We're Checking Out at the Convention

Good morning politics fans! We're up bright and early and raring to go — the convention is a like a politico's Olympics and Super Bowl all rolled into one, and we have big plans today:

We have an interview with Tom Sheridan, an expert on celebrity activism.
Morgan Spurlock is giving a Q&A on Where in the World is Osama bin Laden.
We're checking out the Google and Huffington Post "retreats" for political bloggers. After all even the New York Times says this is the year of the blogger.
Nancy Pelosi, Michelle Obama, Jimmy Carter — and I hear rumors of a live appearance by Ted Kennedy — are all speaking tonight on the convention floor.
Rock the Vote's Ballot Bash featuring Fall Out Boy is tonight
Planned Parenthood is hosting a "Sex and Politics" cocktail party that we hear Aisha Tyler and Ashley Judd will be attending.

Check back as the day goes on and we'll keep you updated you on our adventures! Oh and those tornadoes that hit Denver as soon as the convention opened? I'm sure that wasn't a sign. . . right?

All of the concerts and performances are SEPARATE from the DNC. And RNC. They're held by groups or individuals and they coincide with the convention but they are not specifically for the delegates or sponsored by the DNC. The concert is at a separate venue, a concert house that is not a part of any other DNC activity. Same with all the Tent State activities, the STARZ movie events, Rock the Vote shows, cocktail fundraisers, etc. They are just related events. I'm on a professional group listserv and have gotten invites/notices for all the events but I'm not attending the speech or convention.

I guess this kind of confused me..."There will be entertainment and private parties at both convention. The Creative Coalition is non-partisan and doing a Wednesday night concert at each place."Is the Wednesday night concert AT the convention location?

I'm not sure what you are confused about Jill? Are you wondering if there are going to be full blown concerts and parties on the convention floor in between speeches and official business? But there won't be performances during the big DNC part, right? Like Caroline Kennedy won't give a speech and then say, "Ladies and gentleman...Kanye West". ;) Right? You'd have to go to a different venue sponsored by a private organization? (Not trying to be argumentative, I am just a bit confused!:? )

There will be entertainment and private parties at both convention. The Creative Coalition is non-partisan and doing a Wednesday night concert at each place. The PP cocktail party or the Damon/Affleck event aren't really "private" - they are but you can buy tickets. Unlike some of the parties given by the lobbyists.

Yes Jill, that's my understanding of it. I was trying to say that private parties, concerts usually occur b/c the conventions are in town and not necessarily connected to the official event regardless if it is the DNC or RNC.

From what I know, they are as much a part of the convention as Gulliani's little set up. Events that are occurring in Denver because the convention is there, but having nothing to do with the DNC's official event.

From my understanding, it's typical to have private parties and or concerts throughout all the conventions. I think people are drawing more attention to it b/c Obama's opponents are trying to position Obama as a "celebrity," which I hope Americans are smart enough think about the stuff they are being fed in the media. With all that said, I'll definitely be watching the DNC and RNC coverage. This should continue to be an interesting and exciting political season.

Wow sounds like it will be a fun day ... just make sure to keep us up to date ;) As far as the tornadoes go... my view is: they are just nature. ;) I don't think of weather as a sign of anything. ... I guess that comes from growing up in OK ... right smack in "tornado alley". You two have fun!

Those are private parties being held by Planned Parenthood and Rock the Vote in private locations. I don't think Fall Out Boy is actually a part of the convention.
