DEARSUGAR Needs Your Help: Do Gym Buddies Constitute As Real Buddies?

DEARSUGAR and Gymnasium Geordee need your help. What are your thoughts about this? To give or not to give?

Dear Sugar
I go to the gym every morning and see the other regular gym go-ers there. I've been going for about two years now and have made many friendly acquaintances there.

Yesterday right outside of the ladies lockers, one of my "buddies" extended an invitation to me. It was for her baby shower. I was both flattered and surprised. I don't think I want to go because I go to the gym before work and I don't really have time for chit-chat, but I am wondering if I should send a gift? Gymnasium Geordee

I think "gym buddies" are a great way to make friends!! you should go and who knows, maybe some day she'll be at your baby shower! :)

Weird story. I went to this one particular gym for eight years and just shared the hi's and the how are you's but nothing further than that. I went to one of my favorite clubs one Sat. and there they were, everyone in my gym hanging like they were a highschool clique and I had the best time and got to dance with buffest guys in the club. I then found out one was a hairdresser and started going to her for a huge discount and a nice do. My point, gym buddies can be fun and it took me six years to figure it out.

seems like maybe she enjoys talking to you and wants to extend a casual invitation-no big deal if you go or don't go-to see if you do too i had a similar situation where i kept running into this woman i met in my obgyn's office (we were both pregnant). i couldn't decide whether to go or not and to tell you the truth i actually forgot about this until just now, but i went and it was the start of such a great friendship. that was 8 1/2 years ago! i can't imagine this woman not being my friend now, but she probably wouldn't have if i hadn't gone to that shower. i think you should go :)

Nam no way, ur allowed to feel that way. Alot of people that dont have kids or really want kids or whatever dont get the awe of it. They can be boring, thats why mines just gonna b dinner not all crazy games and crap lol

I may get drawn and quartered around here for saying this, but I absolutely HATE baby showers. Maybe it's because I have like NO maternal instinct, but I have no interest in cooing over booties and pacifiers and stuff. Anyway, I hardly ever go to baby showers, unless they're for one of my best friends or family members. I'll send a gift, though, because it's the nice thing to do. If it's a gym acquaintance, you don't need to go. But it would be nice to send a card and gift certificate or something.

Obviously she invited u bc she considers u a friend. Baby showers are usually on weekends, and just bc u go doesnt mean that u have to be her best friend in the world, but Id send a card at least.

i'm confused. is her baby shower that early? if you've known the woman for around two years, i would go. she may consider you a true friend, even if you don't. and if you don't go, send a gift.
