I run hot and cold on Bethenny Frankel, The Real Housewives of New York City's resident single gal. Often her one-liners are brilliant and her bits of wisdom spot-on. Like last night's observation about "trick guys" — the smart, nerdy guys who are still bitter about their lack of popularity in high school and are often douches in disguise. Here, Bethenny weighs whether to go on a date with a model.

I definitely think there's some truth to the "trick-guy" thing. But Bethenny lost me when she said that balancing a career and a serious relationship might be impossible (what!?) while having a career and a kid is totally doable. Seems a bit out of touch to me. What do you think? And have you encountered so-called trick guys?

Dorothy Perkins
Bethanny is great. My favorite out of any cast. She tells the truth unlike Kelly who is a liar and self-absorbed.
1trick guys is a new term for me, but I know the type.
From one of my favorite "best of CL":
The stereotypical “Nice Guy Who Finishes Last” (NGWFL) is not nice at all, but resentful, envious, negative, hateful boy who blames every failure on outside influences and thinks a relationship with you is going to make them complete human beings.
They use niceness as a defense mechanism, a futile attempt to keep you around and keep you from ditching them, which just prolongs everybody’s misery. This is not to say they don’t have positive qualities, but compared to you they don’t. The NGWFL usually is pretty knowledgeable in one, maybe two things, but isn’t well rounded enough to keep the attention of potential relationships.
Also, these very same boys ignore or are inconsiderate to girls that don’t meet their expectations (i.e. fat, ugly).
2I was shocked to have never heard this argument before, but it makes total sense. Especially in the geeks-are-king Bay Area.
3omg geeksugar! i can totally imagine. with the people i encounter at my job i would HATE to try dating in the bay area.
4Tres, are you being paid by RHWofNYC? It seems like you post about them every single episode. It's cool if they're a sponsor, but at least be honest about it with your readers!
5That's how I feel about Gossip Girl, ANTM and The Hills on every.other.sugar!
Even YumSugar has a Gossip Girl quiz. For real?
6haha empirically good looking.
7i love bethenney! best real housewife by far because she is REAL and honest and calls people out on their crap. the only one i feel like isn't staging everything for the cameras. can't believe she's 37. she cracks me up all the time and i loved her date, hilarious.
8I love her and I agree. I don't think you can be completely committed to building an empire like she is AND be completely committed to raising a kid. Something will fall through the cracks.
9Ugh I hate this show. They're all so catty. Its like high school but they're in their 30s and 40s. Its like some people never leave high school. As for her comment whether people can do both, depends on the people. Honestly.
I wouldn't want to do both, its too much. I'd rather focus on myself and what I want. Studies have been done that once a couple has kids, their relationship wanes. I'd never want my relationship to shrivel up and die. I'd rather have my career and a nice guy to come home to. That is much easier than doing career, husband/bf/kids.
I've heard all the horror stories of what happens once a couple has kids...the husband becomes demoted to 2nd status...the wife gets frumpy and overweight...the relationship dies...and then comes divorce. No thanks.
I couldn't do it all and I wouldn't want to. My time is important and I like to give my attention to whatever I'm doing at the moment, whether I'm at home, with friends, on a date, or at work.
10I LOVE Betthany. She has a good point although I have not experienced it myself. As for the decision of career and family I think it's best to get yourself a good role model who's done both successfully and take it from there.
11She's been one of my favs on the show but I feel like she doesn't want a boyfriend or anything because she always has this stupid and silly excuses as to why it just won't work for her.
12I don't know if this will get noticed here, but nothing against all of you guys who do watch this show or like to see the good bits pulled out for you...but I miss CitizenSugar as a standalone blog. I don't like having to sort through this type of stuff to get "real" news...BRING BACK CITIZENSUGAR!
13Bethany is the greatest she shud get her own show
14This is so true, especially in the Bay Area as geek says. Beware those fools.
15No answer, Tres?
16Starlotus, I totally agree with you. I really only read the sex and love blog, and when they combined them it kind of screwed everything up. I would prefer to have everything separate like it was before.
