Canada's Harper Pledges Cooperation After Election Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Wednesday he will reach out to all parties during the global financial meltdown after his Conservative Party won in national elections but fell short of a parliamentary majority. Harper had called Tuesday's elections early in hopes of getting his party a majority, and in doing so he became the first major world leader to face voters since the financial crisis.

I'm really sad to see that its the Harper gouvernment in minority, again. I live in Montreal, in the province of Quebec, and we are so apart of the rest of the Canada for the politics, there is a big majority of Conservative people near the US, and its not just because the Liberals did a total flops on the past years...People here had vote for the Bloc to have someone representing us in Ottawa, because if there is no Bloc or another party who represent Quebec (Harper dont care about us) we become a total blank for the rest of the planet! I'm glad too see that there is one NPD elected here and some in the rest of Canada, instead of more Conservatives. And there was only about 60% of the Canada who did vote! This is not enough, i dont understand why people here don't go vote!

The problem with the Canadian electoral system is that it is part of the first-past-the-post process, meaning there is no requirement that the winner gains the majority of votes. Because of our multiple party system, the majority of votes are split between the Liberals, New Dems and the Bloc Quebecois, amongst others like the Green Party. I believe that Harper only got 39.5% of the vote anyways...the majority of which was won in the western provinces, as opposed to Liberal/New Dem leads in Ontario and Bloc Quebecois leads in Quebec. Now if it were down to population representation, that's a different story, considering the vast amount of Canadians live in southern Ontario and Quebec.

Yay for sweeping generalizations! The fact that Harper has yet to get a majority, despite the constant screw-ups of the Liberal party, is a testament to the fact that Canadians don't trust him/agree with his policies. Plus, the result isnt really indicative of Canada's true leanings considering that the conservatives received 38% while the Left vote was 51% split btw three parties: Liberals 26%, NDP 18%, and the Greens 7%.

I wasn't following it that closely, but I was surprised Harper won. At least he didn't win a flat out majority.

I don't get canada, they claim to hate Bush, hate American politics, and claim to loooove Europe, yet they have elected Harper (who many call the canadian Bush) over and over again.
