I've not ever heard of an inhaler being on the list of medications. It shouldn't be, if it is.

Heaven forbid if a kid has an asthmatic kid has trouble breathing or worse attack and needs there prescription fast acting inhaler but has to make there way to the nurses office to get it!

I'm not arguing the rule it's in place silly but inplace I'm saying that the punishment it's ridculous. And depending on when she started her package of BC that month ( Sunday afternoon) then she needs to continue to take her pills around the same time daily for optimum results i.e. she would be taking them during school hours or the wouldn't be as effective!

I don't like the system, but this girl knew the rules and broke them. If I were her, I'd take these two weeks and begin campaigning on a change to the "zero tolerance" policy.

I used to bring Midol to school since my cramps would be very bad. Thank God they didn't have these rules back then! I think if she knew the rules then she gets what she deserves...

Krrad I carried mine because I would forget in the morning, I had to get my sisters off to school, make breakfast and be on the bus by 6am. Taking it at lunch, after I had a moment to breathe, was a lot easier to remember regularly.

I'm lucky I never got hassled. I took birth control, migraine medication, and carried my inhaler without ever getting hassled. Having your emergency inhaler locked up in the nurses Office in a 3,500+ school never made sense to me. If my teachers ever saw me they definitely exercised common sense before running off and getting me suspended.

just seems easier to take the pill before you leave the house in the morning every single day. it's more effective if you take it at the same time anyway.

sorry but i truly feel she was made an example of and "zero tolerance" is code for "we dont want the responsibility of dealing with things on a case by case basis"

It is part of a drug policy, not hating because it was BCP. There are so many stories of kids getting in trouble for giving classmates ibuprofen and them being charged as drug distributors. It is school policy most of the time and if this student wants to take it at lunch she should arrange to do it at the nurse's office on a schedule.

bast, the girl could have taken that pill at any other time of the day. It doesn't have to be at lunch. She chose that time, knowing that the school doesn't allow medication on school grounds without it being locked up in the nurse's office. It has been like that as long as I can remember.

This is why the American education system is in shambles. Everyday I see stupid stories like his and find out about dumb ass rules in American schools and i am less surprised by some of the things my American classmates say and do. If teachers and principals spent this much effort teaching children and getting them to enjoy class and working hard with those who need it and if parents actually showed some discretion and also acted like parents instead of friends, American schools would be pretty darn good.

BTW, I know when a student is suspended the parent has to be notified, but in this particular case since teenagers can get a prescription for birth control without the parents consent the School walks a fine line of violating this students right to privacy. What if the mom didn't know?

While I understand the school is trying to protect students with it's prescription policy putting harsh penalties on all prescription drugs without any "case by case" standards is not the way either. A teen girl or boy shouldn't have to share his/her personal sexual status with the school. From the article she seems like an exceptional student, and in this case I think the penalty should have been waved. I think the real worry should be students sharing illegal drugs and alcohol, because I'm sure that is happening way more than people sharing there birth control!

Yeah, as silly as it seems, them's the rules. Schools have always been strict about medication at schools.

I'm with genesis.. They do it will all pills from what I know. At my cousin's school, they have to go to the front or nurse's office to take any kind of pills

During two weeks of watching television game shows and trying to keep up with homework online, the Fairfax teen, an honor student and lettered athlete, had time to study the handbook closely. If she had been caught high on LSD, heroin or another illegal drug, she found, she would have been suspended for five days. Taking her prescribed birth-control pill on campus drew the same punishment as bringing a gun to school would have. that kinda concerns me, you would think students would be more likely to share their weed instead of their birth control

I can only object to the length of time of the suspension, the zero tolerance thing is well-known. I don't like Carla Bruni and if she's teaching something, I doubt I want to know it. I'm glad Obama's being so clear about respecting Islam, though the rabble at home's going to complain. I love the Good article.

I can understand the school's policy, but I think the punishment is a little harsh. She had a presecription. Two weeks is just a little crazy. I think it was more of a lack of judgement on her mother's part. She knew she was taking the pills. She should have just had her daughter start taking her pills in the evening instead of at lunch.
