It may be intended as nice, but it still puts someone in a place of non-professional respect. If it's not something you would say to your boss, you shouldn't say it to anyone else you are supposed to be non-intimate with. Princess, babydoll, sweetie, etc. They are all infantalizing. Coming from someone who doesn't know you from spit, and has no idea if you're "sweet" or not, it reinforces the notion that as a woman you "should" be sweet. I know most of you will not see where I'm coming from here, and that's fine. But IMO, it means you're not looking around enough.

I call people sweetie and honey all the time too, but never in a professional setting. I don't think it's a big deal, but he was right to apologize so that it didn't get blown too far out of proportion.

Hill would never run as an indie, sweetie. She would lose, first of all. Secondly, after this is all over, she can return to the loving arms of the Demo party who will be so relieved that she finally gave up. She can hope for better luck in '12 or '16. She will still be young enough, sweetie.

the sweetie thing has been an issue with many women for several years now. I remember my Dad having to deal with these types of issues at his work in a state run agency over 10 years ago. I personally have never been bothered by someone calling me sweetie, honey etc.

Sweetie, coming from someone you know and who loves you, is always nice to hear. Coming from someone you don't know, or someone who has any authority over you whatsoever, it's condescending.

Excuse me, but we have a president who calls people Turd Blossom and Scooter. I don't think sweetie is less politically professional than either of those.

I never had foie gras but there were many people pissed off here in Chicago about the ban. Cabaker27, a lot of people said (I was watching some analyst this morning) OB was unprofessional for calling her sweetie and to be taking seriously in politics he needs to polish up to be successful.
