Bras in Pop Culture

Topless on Television

Whether it's a two-piece bathing suit or bikini or a bra, I hardly see the difference when they're shown on TV. Maybe it's because the bra never made a scandalous TV debut like other taboos, but it's struggled longer for nonshocking acceptability in pop culture.

Sunday night the TV Guide Channel will premiere a two-part series, Sex on TV, which will take us through the evolution of bare skin on the small screen. While bras could always be shown, networks had to mind their presentation until the '70s. There were two choices: put the bra on a mannequin or over a leotard.

And actual breasts? They're the last frontier. Even 34 years after bare breasts were first shown on Steambath, a PBS play adaption about — you guessed it — steam bathers, it's still taboo.

Considering we have HBO and Showtime if we want to see nudity mingling with substantial plots, is it even an issue at this point?
