The Beard (the Other Kind) in Pop Culture
It's
National Beard Month and
that doesn't just mean facial hair. Not to us anyway! A whole other beard genre's been growing since the middle of the 20th century — the gay cover-up beard, which is slang for a person of the opposite sex used as a cover for a gay partner. At its best, the beard is mutually beneficial to both partners. At its worst? A life of lies. For a long time the term was as secretive as its roots, but I've been hearing it more and more to describe not only real-life marriages, but also TV and movie couplings.

Don't forget the third kind...The Beer-ed.
1I guess a picture of Katie Holmes was a little too on-the-nose for the topic, huh Tres?
2I've met a number of divorced or separated men who played normal knowing they liked men just to please society and family only to leave the marriage 10 to 25 years later to finally be who they really are. It's not fair to women but in all fairness the sooner society gets over homosexuality the sooner women can stop marrying gay men who are playing straight.
3I totally agree, Hypno. That's a great reason that gay marriage is empowering to women.
4I find this post offensive. The 'not just hair' reference, the slang terms to describe some peoples' relationships, comparing real relationships to t.v. relations - "Three's Company"??
5I dated a guy once who was going through a divorce after eighteen years and three kids later. He was forty four and although he'd had hook ups during his marriage I was his first relationship with a male. I knew it wouldn't last because I was the first sample in the candy store this dude was about to go buck wild, lol. I see him now and then he still hasn't settled down.
