On The View this morning, Barack Obama sat on the couch and chatted with Barbara and Company. Fending off a show of lady-style admiration perhaps harder to finesse than a barrage of tough debate questions, Obama succumbed, seeming to blush a little at the attention. Aw! He thinks Brad Pitt is better looking! Phew, I'm glad we got that cleared up. I wonder if they drew straws to see who got to sit next to him?

Barbara! Walters! Said Obama was "very sexy looking." Ack! But, the conversation went on to take a more serious turn, with resident conservative Elizabeth Hasselbeck asking Obama about his response to the Wright controversy, and if his relationship with the pastor showed a "lack of judgement." The discussion turned to race and got very heated, with Whoopi declaring, "this is a racist country."
To see Obama's Wright response from this morning and a video of Elizabeth's statements from earlier in the week, read more.
Obama responded, "I think he's saddened by what's happen, and I told him I feel badly that he has been characterized just in this way — and people haven't seen the broader aspect of him."
Here are Elizabeth's earlier Wright statements.
Oh! Check out Barbara! She makes an excellent point, there.
Did you catch Obama's big View appearance?

Why didn't Elisabeth bring her statements up when Obama was there?
I think it is so absurd for people to try and paint this as if Wright has been saying that one sermon for 30 years. The church is famous for its outreach to the impoverished, and it only makes sense that as a community organizer, Obama would want to support a group that helps so many people (house the homeless, helping low income AIDS/HIV patients, literacy programs, prisoner/church outreach, etc.).
1Jillness, I agree - I really wish she would have said it while he was there. She doesn't act like she has a problem with anyone else but I really would have loved to see BO put her in a good place in a professional way. I have been to the church before as I stated several time, Wright is not the only minster. All of his messages were not to the extent as the ones published by the media. As, Joy-from the view stated, only b/c you attend there and you may not agree with something someone says does not mean that you denounce the whole church ( her example with the Catholics and how some priest have been in the sexual scandal). I think it just weird that people can say there is no one in their life they they may disagree with but have that person in their life. No one agrees with someone 100% of the time.
2if it was babs she said "he is VEWY sexy Wooking"
3Elizab!tch is sooo annoying I'm sure if it was anyone else their conservative views just wouldn't rub people the wrong way but there is just something about her and the way she talks that's so freaking annoying!!!!
4nyaradzom2001, I thought it was just me but for some reason when she talks and it just makes me want to smh - all the time. I really hope her world never crashed b/c she thinks this way. I wonder how her home life is.
5bella nice to know I'm not alone wither. She s very condescending when she talks to people I do't know maybe I just dislike her so much that everything she does just seems wrong.
6They need to bring back lisa ling, though it would be a step down for her.
7"if it was babs she said "he is VEWY sexy Wooking""
8I wonder if Elizabeth realizes how hypocritical she is...I'm sure ABC, Disney have done some pretty shady things as well as advertisers....should she be criticized for that? No, we would never bulk her in that category because we're not idiots and we get that a person is their own person and in the end, at the end of the day we make our own choices. I have listened to my relatives go on and on in homophobic, racial slurs and getting in debates with them. THEIR IGNORANCE DRIVES ME NUTS but they are my family and I will still eat dinner with them...
9GeriAnne1932, exactly. I agree with you.
10when i see elizabeth I just think of her on survivor.
11The same thing happened to him on Meet The Press.
12CaterpillarGirl, I was wondering where she came from. Is that how she got her start?
13Yes, she started on Survivor, the leech! I'm not impressed by her pretense at intelligence. No matter what that girl says, SHE still cannot convince me that the sun rises in the east.
14i dont get the view. remember the beginning five different women from diff walks of life. now its babs, three comedians and a reality "star"
15that said elisabeth is way off. there are plenty of people who go to churches synogogues etc and believe themselves a member of that faith. they dont agree with everything their church leaders say. i certainly dont. it doesnt make them a liar or less faithful it makes them thoughtful and human.
i thought the whole interview was great. and i got the sense that joy wanted a piece of obama, the way she was looking at him as she sat next to him was priceless, lol! and elisabeth is just the most annoying person on that show, no wonder she was voted the worst interviewer in some poll. everytime she opens her mouth i feel like im just a little bit more stupid after.
16Is Joy Jewish, in the beginning of the show eons ago, I swore she said she was Jewish. Maybe she is and her family is just Catholic.
17"Barbara! Walters! Said Obama was "very sexy looking." Ack!"
I'm watching it right now and she just said it. I have to agree with her. Haha.
18Joy is Italian...I'm sure she's Catholic, not Jewish.
19Condi Rice spoke out about the treatment of black Americans. It is quite interesting what she says.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080328/FOREI...
I think her stance on the issue might enlighten some Republicans. Sometimes it takes someone you trust to make you listen.
20"Why didn't Elisabeth bring her statements up when Obama was there?"
Because she didn't want to be taken down a few notches. She knew it wouldn't reflect well on her if she went on the attack...for once she was smart, I guess. I can't stand her PERIOD.
21"America doesn't have an easy time dealing with race," Miss Rice said, adding that members of her family have "endured terrible humiliations."
"What I would like understood as a black American is that black Americans loved and had faith in this country even when this country didn't love and have faith in them — and that's our legacy," she said.
22I think you guys are not looking at both sides of this interview.
First, this is a soft ball show, Obama doesn't really appear on the hard shows where the actually ask him those difficult questions. And THAT is why Elizabeth didn't ask him, not because she didn't want to or because she's afraid too (though I could see where she would be since she never gets a word in edgewise before she gets ganged up on and declared "ignorant"), she didn't ask because I'm SURE his campaign advisors made sure that none of the tough questions were asked.
This is The View people, not CNN, not Fox, not MSNBC. Its an entertainment show, they keep it light for a purpose.
And I got a big laugh at Joy.... yep, the only reason people didn't like Kerry is because of the Swift Boat ads... riiigghhttt...
23BTW, I'm not a big Elizabeth fan... I thinks he's pretty, but she isn't very well spoken (well neither are the other 3, so Whoopi has her moments). I don't think Elizabeth does much for conservatives... but since there are pretty much no conservatives on any talk show outside of Fox, I'll take what I can get!
24She's, not he's... haha! now THAT would be an interesting story!
25I've never watched The View other than a few clips here and there; I think they're all annoying.
26"because she's afraid too (though I could see where she would be since she never gets a word in edgewise before she gets ganged up on and declared "ignorant")"
Ok...do you watch the View? I ALWAYS watch Hot Topics, usually not the rest of the show and Elizabeth ALWAYS get a word in edgewise. She's just stubborn as a mule, set in her ways and even though she presents herself as someone who is all for equality, no one's really buying it and that's why she's the least popular on the show. In my opinion, she is. She thinks she's more worldly and her thoughts matter more than the other ladies who have probably lived through and seen the worst of the worst in life. She's obnoxious and pretentious and the thing is, all she's really famous for is being in Survivor, not to mention kissing Bush's ass every 2 minutes.
27She's VERY ignorant, it's true.
I always love what Whoopi, Joy, and Barbara have to say and when they put her kin her place ever so nicely cause she deserves it. Just the other day, Barbara told her to 'watch it!' with her comments because she was being overly testy and talking lots of sh*t.
Also, I'm sure there's no conspiracy about them not being able to ask Obama any tough questions. TRUST ME, he can handle it.
28"she didn't ask because I'm SURE his campaign advisors made sure that none of the tough questions were asked."
They did talk to him about Wright, though. I don't see how you can be soooo sure what restrictions were placed on the interview. I respect your opinion, but this sounds like random speculation to me.
29"Yes, she started on Survivor, the leech! I'm not impressed by her pretense at intelligence. No matter what that girl says, SHE still cannot convince me that the sun rises in the east."
I agree! She's hardly intelligent and definitely not interesting.
30*in her place.
oops.
31I can tell you that they have set questions they are to ask the guests on their shows, and questions they are NOT to ask. EVERY SHOW has these. We do not know if she was told to stay away from that topic.
32I'm saying it from the fact that the View is not a news show, its a light show. If you want to elected and show the american public what you're made of, you don't go on Regis and Kelly, you show up on CNN or Fox or something!
And campaign advisors, just like publicists to celebrities can require things not be asked of their candidates, esp. when they are on entertainment venues, not news venues.
33Indie, you got me there, I don't watch everyday because I think they are all annoying. I used to watch more often before Rosie, but then I tapered off... so that was the last impression I had was Rosie running all over her the second she opened her mouth up.
Even now when I do catch it, they'll let Elizabeth say what she wants about fashion or whatever, but when it turns to politics, most of them talk right over her or roll their eyes, from what I've seen they do far more condescending than Elizabetch does.
Even if she did get to have her say, even if no one every interrupted her or put her down, it STILL wouldn't be a balanced debate because you have 3 people on one side of the coin and 1 on the other. They need to rename the show "the View from the left" because it certainly doesn't mirror the makeup of women in the USA today, seeing as how in the last election they split 50/50 dem vs. republican.
Luckily most of us here are smart enough to not be taking what these women say to the ballot box, but there are some people out there who do, and they are not seeing both sides of the argument.
34"We do not know if she was told to stay away from that topic."
But we DO know that they DID ask him about that topic specifically...so that would lead me to believe that it wasn't "off limits".
35Yes but they could have issued limits and restrictions. I am not saying either way, because honestly I don't watch the show for the reasons Cabaker wrote, but the entertainment business is sneaky, and we do not know what went on behind the scenes
36Maybe his campaign advisors gave them limits, maybe they didn't.... Maybe they chose to ask him softball questions cuz thats their show, thats prolly closer to the truth.
Either way I think Elizabeth being too scared to ask is not a likely reason.
37Obama's appeared on Meet the Press, This Week with George Stephanopolous, The Situation Room and The Daily Show - and he's on an MSNBC sit down interview today. What 'harder' shows are on these days that he could do?
38No, I wouldn't let the View influence my vote, but I think they make valid points at times, especially Whoopi. I have much respect for her, I admit I've been a fan for years, but I think she's intelligent and very willing to hear everyone else's opinions. I hate the View when Rosie was on. She and Elizabeth always clashed because they're two stubborn and out of control when it comes to their opinions, there was always cause for a war between the two. Call the show 'The View to the Left' or whatever you will but I much prefer it that way, and I think that's why it's so successful because there's no other rabid hosts like Elizabeth on there. Rosie was one but she got the boot, and deserved to.
39To me, it kind of defames his character to imply that he would restrict her from talking to him about that topic.
Since we don't know what went on behind the scenes, it just seems a little insulting to not give him the benefit of the doubt, especially considering that the only enlightenment we have about his appearance was that they did address that issue with out hesistation.
But I understand we won't all agree all the time, and that is cool.
I can mildly
disagree with you and still think you rock!
40I have to confess, I really don't know what conservative or liberal views are. I think people create division when there is none.
Does conservative mean you automatically agree with the war in Iraq? From watching Elisabeth Hasselbeck on The View, who says she's a conservative, that's one of her main talking points. To prove that the war is right, but what's so conservative about warmongering. I don't get it.
Does liberal mean you automatically disagree with the use of force? Really? I'm pretty liberal, but I completely understand in the necessity of war at times, however distasteful.
I just tend to believe most people are moderates. Maybe that's because I'm only looking via my point of view though.
41Also, if I remember correctly...none of them 'on the left' specifically said who they're supporting. I can tell that Joy would lean more towards Obama but she didn't discount Hillary. Barbara is always neutral. WE KNOW that Elizabeth is a Republican
, she enver shuts the hell up
about it. Whoopi is mostly neutral, I've heard her say favorable things about both Hillary and Obama and she said she wanted to see McCain on the show. I'm sure she's genuinely interested in
what he has to say. Sherri's most likely a Democrat...oh, actually she's supporting Hillary.
42*never
43the interview could have been better, Elizabeth has her moments, does anyone know why Sen.Obama won't appear on FOX new Sunday
44Joy really seem to like Hilary, Whoppie said she voted for Clinton during the New York primary beacuse of something she has said about China, Sherri is a democrat this is the first time shes voting, damn i need to stop watching the view ( bows my head in shame, while i run of the the room)
45Jill I'm not saying only Obama advisors would do this, I think every candidates advisor would do this, esp. if their candidate has taken a lot of heat in the recent weeks.
I'm not making a judgement of Obama himself. Though I do think he should appear more often on news shows and less often on entertainment shows... but I'm sure if he gets the nom thats going to happen.
And Steph, I really don't consider the Daily Show to be a difficult program, its an entertainment show, not a news program... though sadly a lot of people get their news from outlets like that. And honestly, CNN is so enamored with him, I wouldn't expect them to ask the tough questions. I would love to see him appear on Fox more because I see Hillary on there all the time! In 2004, Kerry was on there a bunch of times! And if he's as much of a uniter as people think he is, then why not reach out to the other side?
I just like to see candidates step outside the box of who supports them and go into more difficult situations where people aren't as likely to give them a pass. But as I said, I don't entirely blame him for not doing it now, but if he continues to sidestep these places once he gets the nom, I think he'd be missing out on an opportunity to really show what he's made of.
46Yeah, cause you know...he's ALWAYS on the View.
47I think Joy likes Obama more..see how she was touching him during the interview? She was obviously enamored..at least a little bit. She was focusing all her attention on him, not that I blame her. He oozes charisma, he bathes in it.
Ha.
48Jill, I don't really disagree with you, I just think people are being a bit hard on Elizabeth, when it could have very well not been her decision. I see your point with Obama's character, but sometimes advisers make these type of decisions, and I really don't think any less of him if it was his or his campaign decision. It is suppose to be more of a light show.
Zahara I had not hear of it. Jill do you know?
49When was the last time you saw John McCain on the View or on Ellen... or Oprah?
Hasn't Obama been on some of these outlets TWICE?
