Is It Bad Luck For the Bride and Groom to See Each Other Before the Wedding?

Since I'm so traditional, you probably won't be surprised to hear that I consider it bad luck for the bride and groom to see each other before the wedding ceremony. Of course some couples don't believe in that old-wives tale, and I'm sure those that do get a peek or even share a moment together before their walk down the aisle still live happily ever after. I'm just too superstitious to chance it. Are you like me? Do you think it's bad luck for the bride and groom to see each other before saying "I do"?

Not so much for the luck would I not want my fiance to see me, but because I want to see his face when he sees me walking down the aisle in my dress! I'm getting married in August, and it's so hard not to tell him anything or not show him! But I really want to see his expression.

I don't believe in "luck". Superstition belongs in the dark ages.

I don't think it's true, but I would want to keep the wedding completely traditional by making sure he doesn't see my dress.

I'd definitely like to see him and do pictures earlier in the day and then maybe not see him right before the ceremony. I like the idea of having a special reveal of the dress and everything for him before I walk down the aisle, that seems special and personal. Then when I walk down the aisle, that can be the reveal for everyone else. :)

But we are doing a destination wedding in Costa Rica and our wedding planner has arranged for a couples massage on the beach the morning of the wedding. I couldn't pass that up! But on the flip side, I don't want him to see me in my dress until I walk down the isle. That is where I put my foot down!

I agree w/ aimeeb - its more tradition than superstition. If I were in that position, I would like to see my fiance the day of the wedding (maybe we need to have that last big talk before we are husband and wife), but I think it would be exciting if he didnt see me in my wedding dress until I'm walking down the aisle. But I dont believe in the superstition of it.

I went with all the traditions... he never saw my dress or even a picture of it, we didn't see each other for 24 hours before we got married, and we did not see each other until i walked down the aisle. It was almost comical because at one point we were both en route to the ceremony site and our best man and matron of honor were on the phone making sure we didn't drive past each other and accidentally see each other... at one point we were close enough to each other on the road that I had to take a detour in a cemetary in order to miss him. I love traditions.

I didn't care too much either way; my wedding/reception is set up so that there is a cocktail hour between, when photos can be taken. But my FIANCE is the one who insists on not seeing me until I appear on the aisle- he refuses to hear any detail about what I will look like, too. Not superstitious, he just wants to be surprised.

We saw each other in the morning...he brought the last of his stuff over to my apartment, since we didn't live together before we got married. We saw each other at the church, too, but then as soon as we started getting ready we made sure to steer clear of each other. We weren't superstitious, we just wanted the "reveal" where we saw each other in our wedding clothes for the first time.

I've open umbrellas inside buildings, broken a mirror or two, and have had a black cat cross my path for nearly 5 years. None of the bad luck tied with these superstitions have rung true. I'd be hard pressed to believe this one. My husband and I saw each other before our wedding as well. It's more of a tradition that stirs excitement in both the bride and groom.

We spent the whole day together before our wedding. But then, the wedding wasn't a really big deal. I don't think it's bad luck- it seems sort of bizarre that it would be. What's supposed to happen to you if you catch a glimpse of your significant other?

What exactly is the superstition/tradition based on? Does it hark from the days of arranged marriage and it's feared that the groom will dislike the bride and call it off or something?

I don't really believe in this at all...I'm not superstitious. I ate breakfast with my husband the day of our wedding. We went our separate ways to get ready, of course, and we saw each other next at the ceremony!

I agree with Jillerin. I was TOTALLY against the "First Look". I thought nothing could change my mind...until I spoke with my photographer who changed my mind. We are going to do the photos prior to the ceremony, which works out well, because our ceremony isn't until 7, so we want to get to the reception as soon as possible!

I don't think it's bad luck I just wanted to build the excitement. He didn't see me at all before our wedding and I only got a peek at him right before I went down the aisle. The thing is that I stayed with my mom and brother the week before the wedding and it was so hard. I didn't realize how accustomed I'd grown to having him with me. It was so hard to be apart that long and I can't even say how happy I was to just hold his hand once I got down the aisle.

I think it has to do with tradition also. And while I like the tradition I think we will probably get pictures before the wedding. I don't want a huge gap between the wedding and reception. I like what jillerin was talking about --- doing a sort of 'reveal'.

Yeah I'm with everyone else about tradition.Plus, seeing my husband's face when my dad walked me down the aisle was absolutely priceless. His grin was so HUGE and stayed like that all day and night. :P

I don't think there is anything to worry about. It's just a superstition but everyone freaked me out so much that I didn't let my husband see me before the wedding but he did see the dress.
