"What's your sign?" This might be the most direct way to find out a person's astrological sign, but often the curiosity is disguised by less ugh-inducing words. "When's your birthday?" is what I often hear. "So you're a Pisces? Aries?" And then, inevitably, silence. Quietly judging silence.
The last time this happened to me, I fired back with, "What does that mean to you?" I never got an answer. Why ask the question if it's not going to segue into a new discussion?
Don't get me wrong — I read my horoscope almost every day, so it's not like I don't want to believe. It's just that I wouldn't use astrology as a tactic to get to know someone or, worse, seek a rationale behind someone's actions. Do sign seekers, overt or covert, ever make you want to unleash some Scorpio-style wrath?

I'm with you. I don't mind people asking my sign or something, but when they do it like they're trying to base my entire personality on that it just turns me off.
1when in vegas over memorial day weekend this year, i did have a guy ask me right out what my sign was... my response, "did you really just ask me that?" THEN, he proceeded to explain that we were extremely compatible, to the point that he googled it on his blackberry and insisted i read the article. ummm, no thanks.
2a girl I went to high school with was very VERY into astrology, and we would be in class for example and having a discussion and someone would say you know "I think the author meant blah blah" and she'd raise her hand and say things like "well that is a very Libra point of view, because ..." and not actually contribute to the conversation but just tell us all why that person felt the way they did about English class by their sign. it was really annoying.
3I don't mind being asked my sign because it clues me in that I am talking to an absolute idiot.
4I don't mind because I'm a Pisces and we're the best
And I'm totally guilty, sorry
world! Not that I outright ask people their signs, but if the topic comes up I happily point out to non-believers just how much they actually do show their signs' traits... I don't judge
people based on their signs or our supposed compatibility tho, because individual traits are a lot more important than the ones they share with everyone born within a month of them.
5I am with you Chouette. People who look to astrology to determine a person's personality always come off as dumb to me. And when a guy does it, it's really creepy.
6I dunno, think it's fun. A good friend of mine is a professional astrologer, and she's able to guess most peoples' signs on the first or second try. It always opens up conversations for her. I'd be annoyed if someone went on and on about how I'm SO STUBBORN because I'm a Taurus — not that I'm stubborn at all, ahem — but it just seems like another way to break the ice.
7I guess I'm lucky! No guy has been lame enough to use that line on me yet. But if he did ask, say, two dates later, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I actually think it's fairly accurate (I'm a Taurus; stubborn as hell and I love nature). If anything it's kinda fun.
I do
think it's a problem though in that someone might plant that in the back of their minds and forever see you as x or y sign as opposed to an individual. I may have hit some Taurean traits but
apparently they love luxury and are very responsible. I'm neither.
8I would judge THEM for asking a question like that. That just makes them look lame, unless they're just being funny or asking for fun. Horoscopes are fun, but I don't really take them too seriously.
9It's kinda funny how the OP implies that the people asking are being judgmental, when the comments clearly demonstrate that the rest of you are much more judgmental. Sure, it would be idiotic to base your opinion of someone solely on their astrological sign, but it's even worse to assume that everyone who doesn't share your pessimistic disinterest is intellectually inferior to you.
10I am not the OP, but the problem I have with the question is not that it's judgmental, it's that it's just plain stupid. We all get judged every single day, and I am indeed judging people who take astrology seriously enough to ask someone's sign as a legitimate way of learning about the person's personality.
11I'm with Chouette.
I can see reading your horoscope for fun and whatnot, but really, how can you take astrology seriously?
How can the position of celestial bodies predict your personality? Really. The doctor who delivered you would have a greater gravitational force on you than the planets. Why aren't horoscopes based on the weight of the doctor?
And I find it even harder to believe that 1/12 people share the same personality as me and are having the same type of day I am.
12"Sure, it would be idiotic to base your opinion of someone solely on their astrological sign, but it's even worse to assume that everyone who doesn't share your pessimistic disinterest is intellectually inferior to you."
Hm, sorry. Actually, it does make them intellectually inferior. Astrology is, by its very nature, irrational. Its not based on concrete, tested science; its based on magic and fantastical correlations. Its a belief that can be argued with facts, so sad to say....but if you believe in astrology, you ARE an idiot.
13lmao, ouch Anonymous! i guess i'm too much of an idiot to understand, because putting absolute faith in the generic realm of 'science' makes you sound like a fool. and a virgo.
14You guys should check out Sextrology by Stella Starsky and Quinn Cox.
The book is funny and the fact that it was former President Bill Clinton's bookshelf is even funnier.

16It's not 'faith', that's the point. And what do you mean by generic? Astrology makes millions off of the generic associations most common people accept as the range of human experience, and then gullibles miraculously believe its all about themselves and their future, as the individual. I mean, I could get into the science of it all, but I'm afraid it'll just go over your head...into the stars
17I'm definitely a virgo, and it's becoming more and more obvious as I get older. I get really annoyed when my room's not spotless, I clean when I'm angry, I'm relatively organized even when my stuff is in big messy piles, etc.
My cousin and grandma are both Gemini, and they are really, really, fitting of the Gemini idea. Both are world travelers and really social with huge groups of friends.
I don't know much about other signs, but it really wouldn't surprise me if my other family members fit them to a T too.
18God I really really hate to bring religion into this, but Anon, based on your logic wouldn't that suggest that religious followers are idiots as well? I mean, it's not based on concrete, tested science either, but you won't hear anyone on this site calling them idiots. Just saying.
19The difference between religion (I am mostly talking about Judeo-Christian religions) and astrology is that religion is based on faith and the idea that human beings are not capable of understanding how god works and how he controls the world. Astrology, on the other hand, is supposed to be something that we, as humans beings, are able to observe, predict and understand.
If you try to argue that a religion is false, a believer can always claim that things might not make sense to humans because there is a higher being who operates beyond our level of comprehension. Any "holes" in the belief system can be attributed to the fact we just can't understand. There is no test or study that can either prove or disprove the existence of god. (But FWIW, I do not believe in god and I do think that some religious people are idiots for believing certain things)
The principles of astrology, however, can be tested. According to astrology, two people born at the exact same time should have very similar personalities, but studies have shown that it's simply not true. Therefore, if something SHOULD be observable and predictable, but studies show that is absolutely NOT, people who still believe it are either stupid or for whatever reason choose not to use their brains.
20True!
We really can't prove most religions false, but we can prove astrology is a load of BS for the most part!
21Yes, yes I would. And the reason no one would DARE say that religious people are idiots is because of some irrational societal taboo that places religion on a pedestal (e.g., religion is GOOD, though history has MANY examples that say otherwise), rather than demand it answer the very same questions that science is at least willing to test. If someone says science is wrong, you have to prove otherwise. If someone says science is right, you still have to have someone duplicate your results over and over. You can't do that with religion or astrology; you either do or don't believe. You can't challenge belief. You can challenge science.
22Exactly.
So I find it somewhat hypocritical that people can so easily call out astrology
as BS when it's essentially on the same boat as religion. You can't prove it, you're resigning yourself to a belief that your life is being influenced by some higher power (be it god or the
stars), yet one is more acceptable than the other.
But I'll agree, on the surface astrology seems accurate but I do believe every single person on the planet is completely unique and no one could possibly be having the exact same day as another. Not even remotely. Not to mention I'm allegedly incompatible with Aquarians but two of my favoritest people are (well, I strongly detest another, but anyways...)
Sorry to go there.
Was just a thought.
23I like the idea of astrology but I don't base my decisions on what my horoscope says to do, nor do I limit who my partners are based on compatibility. I think I fall under the basic description of a Capricorn. My best friend is also a Capricorn, we call ourselves Team Goatb*tch. Astrology should be taken lightly.
24Astrology goes into a lot more depth than just "12 signs based on the month you were born." You can not determine a personality by this because there are more than 12 personalities that exist.
By knowing your birthdate, birthtime, and location you were born, you can obtain a whole "birth chart" which encompasses many different factors and where EACH and EVERY plant was at this time and their relation was to each other and you, which thereby influences all the different personalities. Therefore, 2 people born at the same time but across the country from each other would have different personalities because the planets were aspected to each person differently. All of the planets play a huge role (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, etc) determining a personality since they're all in different "signs" at birth. example: Sun in Virgo, Venus in Gemini, Mars in Aries. Venus would be your "love plant" as in how you love, your approach to romance, where as Mars would influence how your ambition, motivation, etc. Same goes for all other planets, they all represent something different, and based on what "sign" it is in at the birth time would represent different aspects of the personality.
There is much more to it than what is believed by the general population, thanks to magazines and newspapers that give "daily horoscopes" which I agree, is BS because its not specific enough. This is what makes everyone think astrology is BS, therefore, they never further research it.
www.astro.com is a great website for learning more and a copy of your birth chart can be obtained here.
Also.. astrologists say plants are just "influences" on the personality, you have free will to do and act as you want.
25Lots of good arguments here. Mix tape, I love the "Team Goatb*tch". I'm a Capricorn too.
26I used to always make fun of my best friend for being into astrology and when she met her boyfriend she right away asked him about his sign. He wasn't into it either and she told him about how I laugh at her for it. When I finally met him a few months later (don't live in the same city) he introduced himself to me with 'Hi, I'm Rizwan, and a capricorn' Gave us all a good laugh.
27Barf! When someone starts talking about signs, I usually ask them if they really think that there are only 12 kinds of people in this world, or if they think that everyone born around the same days as them has exactly the same personality.
EVERYONE can find traits of themselves in the description of all signs, so what's the point?
28I like to read about horoscopes only because I find it amusing when I meet someone who really does fit their sign.
29KadBunny I love that you said that. Honestly I'm not a huge believer in astrology. But it's not based on science any more than religion. If anyone ever calls someone an idiot for their religious beliefs people get way defensive. I don't see why it's okay to call anyone an idiot for what they believe. That's taking it a bit far. Same goes for astrology.
30But like I said I don't believe in it 100% or anything. I just think it's interesting. I'm a Sagittarius. Certain traits fit me and others don't. I don't live by it, but no I don't ever see a need to unleash any sort of wrath over someone asking me what my sign is. Can't say that I have ever felt that way.
I don't believe in any religion either, but most of them seem to make more sense than astrology
31So many judgmental and close-minded people on this site. If you don't believe in it fine, but don't judge others who do. I think it has the same credibility as religion, which is none. Either you believe or you don't. Sometimes it's just for fun, lots of people don't ask you because they think they can judge your personality, they ask as an ice breaker. It's something to talk about, that can be fun and interesting unless you're a judgmental person. I know people who ask now, when they never had before, because they noticed a dating pattern, they seemed to have issues dating the same sign. They found it funny when they were attracted to someone, and they are the same sign as the last 6 people they dated. My advice is to not take astrology too seriously, and don't judge it too seriously either. I think the people who are annoyed by the astrology questions are more judging then the people who ask about. Just my opinion.
32speaking of, where have the horoscopes gone on this site???
33I dont mind either
